Our Flood Story
We've been in the house under 2 months...welcome to homeownership.
Friday AM we noticed a few puddles, nothing much, mopped it up, went to work. Came home to find 4 inches and rising. Tried bucket brigade, still rising, brought as much upstairs as we could...most of our yet unpacked boxes were down there. Called Home Depot and Lowes all over tri state area, only place that had pumps was LI City, they opened at 5am, we slept an hour and hit the road at 4am, arrived 4:59, bought a pump, got home to set it up and it's broken!!!!! Back to LI City 9:00 Sat am set up pump($125) water is up to 10 inches. Pump it out, it fills back up... we get it low enough consistently so we can use the hot water heater, turn gas main back on, we have a leak. Plumber comes($160). Now we need someone to come service boiler $95 an hour plus parts and they won't come until the stops completely.
Anyone know how long it takes the water table to go down, it' starting to get cold!!!
After this weekend I don't know why I ever wanted to be a homeowner.
ETA: Monday afternoon water still coming up through little holes in the floor.

Re: Our Flood Story
I'm sorry - sounds like the water went under the house and then up through the floor. Call companies about sealing it for you.

Re: Our Flood Story
OMG I'm sorry! Do you have flood insurance? Did the prior owners ever mention flooding or was there any evidence of flooding?

Re: Our Flood Story
We have owned our home 2 months also and Friday we came home to just about a foot of water in our very finished basement (when we left in the morning it was dry as a bone not a drop of water). It looks like not much was lost but only time will tell with floors and walls if we dried them up in time right now it looks and smells fine. Ours came in from the foundation it just couldn't repell the water any longer. It is just so depressing. I'm in Lindenhurst too Patty.

Re: Our Flood Story
OMG...
we got water in the basement as well, and then water came into our laundry room....but nothing like what you experienced. I am so sorry! At least you got a pump. FYI, for 'next' time, the fire department can pump you out. They pumped a lot of homes in my neighborhood. Good Luck!

Re: Our Flood Story
When we called the fire dept they said they couldn't help us and they didn't know anyone that could!!!!! Last time I give them a donation it took 4 pumps and 2 days to get the majority of the water out!!!!!!

Re: Our Flood Story
Thanks fore all the replies. It's a tough situation but we're getting through it. Had to cancel our House warming planned for next weekend though.
No evidence of prior flooding, in fact neighbors who have been there over 10 years say this is a first for all of us.
We don't have flood insurance but our losses are fairly minimal.
Can anyone recommend a company that can seal the floor once this is all over? What type of company would I be looking for?
As far as the fire dept, it's my understanding they will only pump it out if there as an electricity or gas issue that you can't get to with the water there.
And finally...Tuesday morning - STILL coming in through the floor. I think we have an eternal spring.
At least it's very, very clear clean water otherwise I couldn't handle it.
