OUR IVF Grant consult was Today..
And well we still dont know much. Im more then confused on how it all works.
I have had all the neccesary tests, the pre req 4 iuis( and then some) and he agreed IVF was the next step.
HE asked us if we would do IVF if we didnt get the grant ( gotta love starting out that way), Obviously thats a No...we dont have close to that type of money.
He basically said it all is gonna come down to my Day 3 Fsh. Dr. Chu had hoped he would use an old one, but he wants this cycle's done.
He said the 11.3 I had was High.
I asked what was "high". I thought the cut off was 14 and he said they like it under 10. ( not what I have heard and I told him this)
I asked him, well what will happen if I get a number around 11, will we be denied, and he said I really dont know.
Why he doesnt know is again a question I have. I was told by Dr. chu HE made the medical decision on the grants approval but he was acting as if it wasnt up to him.....and I didnt want to push things and ask because we were starting to feel our "future" was in his hands.
So.....I go for FSH on CD3 and PRAY. Then on CD5 would start BCP's and discuss the financial part of all this.
Truth be told, Im not feeling good about this at all.
It seems near impossible that we will be able to get a low FSH as well as the money needed in time.
It's all so overhwleming and sad, I just cant bare yet to even think about it all.
Sorry so long.

Re: OUR IVF Grant consult was Today..
I would call Dr. Chu and tell her everything he told you. I have to be honest, he's the one doc there that I don't like very much... he might be very good at what he does but I think he comes off at being a bit cold and his bedside manner, well, he made a comment to me that had me in tears and I don't tear up easily... I teach obnoxious high school students, it's hard to get me to cry. During my monitoring this IVF cycle, he was very vague in how he described things to me... bloodwork, number and size of follicles etc. The one day I saw Dr. Hershlag... he was the best... the turned the sono monitor towards me, pointed out the three layers of my uterus... who knew?? and explained everything to me and was so gentle which is a good thing because some days you feel a bit wacky from the meds
Could it be that they will take the candidate that has the best numbers and they use the range as a guideline? Could that be the reason for his vagueness?
Maybe he asked you if you would go through with the IVF w/o the grant just to make sure that you really need that grant money? It's probably just a way to screen people who otherwise could afford it if they just sacrificed
I agree with you about feeling that he has your future in his hands. I felt the same way this last cycle, that is why I never confronted him on his inappropriate comment to me. I haven't forgotten it and plan on saying something to Dr. Rosenfeld, who I LOVE, in the future.
Is there anything you can do to try to improve your numbers? Certain foods, exercises, herbs????

just a question - IF for some reason your FSH isn't the number they want can you just reapply until you get the number they want? or is a one time deal for the grant?
As a high FSHer myself, I always had "FSH goals" before I could cycle, once under 12 and another time under 11!
if you're interested some of the ways dicussed to lower FSH (on other boards) are accupuncture, wheat grass, royal jelly, organic foods, only eat warm foods, no caffeine, no alcohol, no nicotine, guided imagery
Good luck!!

Can I get the FSH down in a matter of 5-7 days though? LOL
I dont know if you can re-apply for the grant. I would think no.
I sound like Im throwing a pity party but Im just trying to face reality really.
Even if we got approved. Dr's Chu and Scholl want to Start ASAP rather then risk FSH going up higher etc and I dont think we will have the money regardless.
I feel like its very hopeless right now, but Im still not giving up all hope, theres a glimmer there I think.

I mean he's only doing his job, I know this and he doesnt want to give us false hope. I just cant handle WAITING. Waiting to see what it will be, waiting to see if we can come up with the money and just feeling awful about myself and my life in the meantime.
I honestly think I will lose it if we are denied this IVF and if the numbers are high.

Re: OUR IVF Grant consult was Today..
Donna, I'm sorry you have to go through this. I have seen Dr. Scholl a couple of times and I aslo think he can be cold at times. In fact, I begged Dr. Chu to give me the HSG shot early so that I wouldn't have to go into the office on that perticular weekend because he was doing the IUI's. Anyway, I keep trying to tell myself..Life has a funny way of working itself out. As the months go on and still no BFP, I keep in mind that I am not going to be denied a child. One way or another I will have one. My last visit with Dr. Chu we had discussed IVF as my next step if I do not get my BFP this IUI cycle. I cried and cried and cried...out of fear. Fear that it seems like such a drastic step to me--going from a simple IUI to IVF. And my second fear being--How on this earth am I ever going to be able to afford it. After talking to DH we came up with some ways to do it. We said we would take out a loan, borrow from his 401K, take the money from my IRA or cash in some bonds. I don't know if any of these are options for you but I thought I'd let you know what we thought of. Sometimes we get so caught up in the amount of something that we instantly think we could never afford it. At least thats how I get. Thankgod DH is the one to sit down and think or ways to do things. I hope you don't mind me giving out suggestions. I hope all works out for you.
Hey I was thinking..maybe Dr. Chu can give us a loan. She has to be loaded with all the money I've given to that place. I pay almost everything out of pocket cause my insurance doesnt really pay for anything..and I see her EVERY Thursday. I've probably paid her first childs college tuition by now--and I'm not talking community college either...it's def. Harvard or Yale.
