Outside garbage cans
I've got these 32 gallon green ones. The racoons chew through the lids tip them over and my garbage is everywhere.
It's gotta have wheels and it can't be bigger than 32 galls.
Anyone have a solution? What are you putting your garbage in?

Re: Outside garbage cans
My new neighbors said they use "Deer Urine powder". It seems to keep them away. You have to put it near and around the area you are trying to keep them away from. Also maybe put a light in that area, they don't like light. Good luck. I'm sure I'm going to have the same problem.

Re: Outside garbage cans
Unfortunately, I have the same problem, so we cannot leave them outside. On garbage pick up days I take them out just before they pick up the garbage.

Re: Outside garbage cans
I just picked up these 35 gallon ones this weekend at HD. They were $19.99 each. I picked them b/c the lid snaps on really tight and the handle is molded into the frame of the can, not one of those movable ones to lock on the lid. Our garbage men always rip those handles off and then the lid is completely useless.

I do the same...the cans are kept in our garage until we take them down.

I do need new cans but keeping them in the garage might work. Those racoons tear holes in the lids! They are fearless..we come out and throw things at them and they laugh in our faces.

Re: Outside garbage cans
If you have the room, keep them in the garage. Racoons will find a way to get into any garbage can, in my experience.

We keep them in the garage and then drag them out on garbage days

My sister has this too, except a wider one for her recyclables too. It works well for her. We plan to get one for our house as well.

Re: Outside garbage cans
i have the garage so I wouldn't buy a shed. I'll talk to DH about the garage thing. Our property gets littered with garbage from those rodents.

Re: Outside garbage cans
I've heard sprinkling cayenne or red pepper flakes in the can keeps away squirrels, maybe it would work for raccoons too?

I keep the pails in my garage until garbage day, and always tightly put the lid on.

Re: Outside garbage cans
My 82-year-old neighbor swears that a little bit of Pine-Sol in and around the cans keep the racoons away.
I haven't moved into my house yet, so I haven't tried it, but this woman is like Heloise -- she knows everything! It's worth a shot...
