Over heard a topic at the park this week. Habitat for Humanity.
A group of parents were up in arms that the open area near the subdivision was purchased for Habitat homes to go up.
They want to know how they can fight this...
I can't help but be biased in argument...I am not a homeowner.
Is this a common fight?
It is a great school system in a really nice area...hell, one I am sandwiched in between, can't afford to buy yet make to much for habitat home.
I guess I never realized that they have to be built somewhere, so why not in a safe, great school system?
thoughts? some were saying they should try and sell now before they can't sell later.
does a habitat community really stop people from buying?

I think it might be--depending on the proposed areas. Someone posted about the same issue in her area here before. I never really though about it either, until I heard that, but people will complain about anything.

Yeah, I didn't remember posting on that thread either, although I remembered the discussion, and I do feel the same way.
I was curious about this in my own area, so I looked up the local Habitat wesbite & they have 3 curent projects in my county.
One is in my town & school district but in a different neighborhood. I haven't heard of any complaints, but I'm not right in that neighborhood. That area is generally though of as the lower income area of the town.
However, we don't have the best SD.
The expensive part of town has its own school district, which is always ranked one of the best in country & a lot of people in that area complain anytime town resources are used to things that in their eyes, primarily benefit that lower income area, so they would probably fight it if "charity cases" were being allowed in their award-winning school district. This of course, is just my speculation, though.

It upsets me that people have a problem with HFH houses in their neighborhood. It screams of ignorance to me.

Re: Over heard a topic at the park this week. Habitat for Humanity.
My old job sponsored a house in Coram. It was a great project. The house that we built was very cute. The mom was a single mom with little income.
It's not like they are not involved in the process and the house is free.
You have to qualify, there is a screening. Mostly because they want to assure the success of the program and community.
They do have to pay money every month. It's not free! They cannot sell the house for several years, And they have to participate in helping another project for another candidate.
