Pacifier Toddlers?
Thomas still uses the pacifer. I try to only give it to him at night and bedtime, but lately we're regressing somewhat.
When he graduated to the Toddler Room at daycare, he wasn't allowed to have it anymore. He does GREAT all day without. Never asks them for it and even sleeps a good two hours without it.
The second we walk through the doorway at home, he's begging and whining for it. I had been doing good and distracting him one way or another, but lately, it's unbearable. He's hysterical for it and I cave and give it to him. I feel after a long day at daycare, how can I deprive him of the one thing he wants?
To top it off, I always have several pacifiers in his crib because when he was a baby and waking several times a time, the ped recommended putting a bunch in his crib so he'd be able to find it and put it back in his own mouth. So now he's used to having more than one and now, even when we get home, he wants MORE. More noonies. One isn't enough anymore. He wants one in his mouth and one in each hand!!!
What do I do?????

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
wish i had advice for you - dd is 14 months and we've weaned to her only getting it at bedtime - most of the time its ok - i had to keep it out of sight because if she saw one anywhere (diaper bag etc.) she'd take it. how about slowly decreasing the # of pacis in the crib or distracting him when he wants MORE?

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
my dd is 2 1/2 and still uses the binky. I try to just give it to her at naps and bedtime but when she's watching tv she cries for it. I tried a few times to not give it to her but then I noticed she was sucking her thumb. So I cave and give it to her. I'd much rather have her sucking her binky then her thumb. She doesn't get it if we're playing or outside. I know how you feel, it's very frustrating. I just keep telling myself when she's ready she'll give it up.

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
My DD is a little older but still hooked on the binky at 26 months. We do have her down to only nap time and night sleep. The way we get around giving it to her during the day is that since she thinks everything is alive...we just tell her that binky is napping so she can't have it. Sounds so silly but it has worked! If she ever gets really upset (after a fall or something) and cries & asks for it for comfort, we give it to her but as soon as calms down we tell her it's time for binky to go back to nap & she will put it in the sink herself.

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
DS still uses his pacifier during naps and at night. I try to keep it away from him during the day but every so often I find him with one in his mouth...he has a knack for hiding them from me

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
Thomas also knows where the noonies are usually kept so he'll whine and whine at the diaper bag, or cabinet or by his crib demanding one, even if there aren't any in there. They best is when I inisist that there aren't any noonies in the diaper bag, and then he puts his hand one of the outside pockets and pulls one out! He hides them and then remembers perfectly well where he's put them!
Thanks for the advice ladies!! I appreciate any and all the advice I can get!

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
Ugh, no advice here. Matty is 2 and is really hooked on his binky. He goes without it at preschool but then demands it all the time at home. And its hard because the baby uses one a lot so sometimes he will just grab her binky if it falls out of her mouth! My goal is to REALLY limit it to the car and the crib. I'll be happy with that until he is 3 and then it totally will have to go away!

Same here.
I try to give it only when she sleeps or is tired but....it's so hard, she finds it so comforting and I feel so mean takng it away.
But come 2009, I am going to try harder.

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
I'm probably no expert since DD will be 3 in April and still uses her binky to sleep. She too is a master at hiding one for emergency purposes. Here is what I did to really make her understand that it is only for sleeping: I had a wipes container that had nighttime pictures on it (I think it was one of the lavender scented boxes). I washed it out and put all the binkies in there and I call it her "Nighttime Binky Box" and when she goes in the crib she gets to choose however many she wants (usually 2) then when she gets up, she has to put them back in the box before she gets taken out of the crib. If she is crying for a binky at any time other than nap/bedtime, I tell her she can have her binky but that she has to go in the crib. Sometimes she will sit in there with the binky and calm herself down and then she is ready to give it back and come out again. She does "get it" and pretty much follows the rules. My only warning is to put the Binky Box someplace high where he can't get it, as I've caught my DD with the box and more binkies than she knew what to do with.
I tried convincing her to give her binkies to Santa to bring to all the little babies and she said, "but Mommy I just need them because I am just a baby". It did not fly AT ALL!!! Now anytime I tell her she is a little girl she says, "I am NOT a little girl!! I am just a baby!!"

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
I would not worry about it. Personally I would set rules for when he has them (like nap/bed time only, which you have done) so he knows he still can have it but under certain conditions. But don't stress about it. If he is not ready to give it up don't take the away. All in due time =)

Re: Pacifier Toddlers?
I definitely wouldn't worry about it. Both my boys took pacifiers at at your DS's age were very into it still too. They both gave it up around 2 years old very easily. Even my DS #2 who I was sure would be tough to break the habit was very good about giving it up.
