Paige was kicked by a developmentally delayed kid at the playground today
We got to the playground and soon after, a bunch of teachers and 10 year old kids came in. I knew that something was wrong with the kids but I didnt want the teachers to think I didnt want to be aroudn them so Paige and I just played and when Paige was playing on the stairs/slide this kid came over and kicked her in the ribs.
I was distraught. DH was like did you yell at him and I didnt I was just trying to get her down from there. The teacher came running over and quickly removed him from that area, but I started to cry and Piage was hysterical.
Sometimes i feel like they should make seperate playgrounds. Ones for smaller kids and one for bigger kids. Kinda like dog parks. Some have dog runs for bigger dogs and some have them for smaller dogs.
I felt so bad for my little girl.

omg, poor baby...I hope she is okay
I am glad the teachers responded so quickly, I do not think anyone is to "blame" in this situation

so sorry that happened to Paige, sometimes the bigger kids do play rough, but I bet you were not expecting that

I am so sorry about Paige being kicked and I really truly dont know what the answer is BUT I am totally not for seperating the two like a dog park. Obviously the teachers werent watching them as well as they probably should have been. And in my heart I can honestly tell you I think it could have been a regualr child that had done the same as this disabled child did so I am less likely to think that they should seperate disabled vs non disabled.
I truly don't thnk the OP meant to separate disabled vs. non disabled kids. The way I read it, to separate younger babies and toddlers play structures from the older school aged childrens play structures. unfortunately I don't think that would fly or be able to be enforced.

I agree that she meant age appropriate play areas. In our neighborhood park there is a section for under 5 and then a bigger play area for the older kids

I took it the same way.
Some playgrounds do separate. In Hecksher Park in Huntington, they have the playgrounds marked. The bigger one for the older kids.

I didnt mean it at all for non-disabled vs. disabled. I just sometimes feel as though a lot of the older kids play so rough and to me Paige is so fragile and afraid of the older kids...thats it.
I went to a park not to long ago and there were teenagers running around like lunatics and my DD couldnt even enjoy herself. I know that seperating the playgrounds would never fly but sometime i shy away from places like that.
As far as the disabled kids....i also feel bad for them so thats why I was torn on my feelings for the whole situation. After the "kick" the teachers were watching very closely to the kids especially the ones that got close to Paige.
I feel horrible for those children, but I also feel bad for my DD who I made leave the park because I was paranoid of her getting her much worse.

Oh ...stupid me.... Yeah I guess it wouldnt be a bad idea to do older and younger kids. Though, I bet they would intermingle regardless. Older children always find entertainment is baby things for some reason, not sure why.

First off poor little girl
They do have different playgrounds separated for age.
Last I saw, Heckshire park in Huntington's playground was separated by age.

Re: Paige was kicked by a developmentally delayed kid at the playground today
The park by me has 2 separate sections. One for under 5 and the other for the bigger kids....
Kids are kids and as much as they will watch out for the little ones they arent adults....
I hope Paige is otherwise OK...

she did NOT say separate disabled from non-disabled...she said separate small kids from older kids and I think that is a great idea
Read my post above...I already corrected my response.

I am so sorry. At the park near me it is only 5 and under. And then on the other side of town is a bigger kids park.
And at Bay Park, there are 3 seperate areas for different age levels.

So sorry! Poor girl! I probably would have been crying as well.
In all honesty, if I were in your situation I would put PC aside and move to a different area immediately! Unfortunately, in a situation like that you just never know what might trigger an episode.
I always move my kids when we are on the playground and a bunch teen boys start running around right around where my 3 year old is playing. Although after a bunch of parents give them the evil eye they usually go back to the basketball court were they normally hang out.

Re: Paige was kicked by a developmentally delayed kid at the playground today
awwww...poor baby
Hope she is OK.
Sometimes a seperate playground doesn't even matter. We went to a playground for younger kids and there were older kids (I would say between 10 and 12) climbing on top of everything and jumping across the stuff. There were a bunch of kids there, and Steven wasn't the youngest. I just said "come on, really? Do you not see all of these little kids around?" After about 3 minutes of my dirty looks, they left.

Re: Paige was kicked by a developmentally delayed kid at the playground today
There are many parks that do have separate play areas based on age near myself and my in-laws. I believe one park has a 2-5yr section and a 6-12 year section.
I'm glad she is OK. These things unfortunatley happen amongst toddlers too. But, a bigger kid can definately do more damage.

Re: Paige was kicked by a developmentally delayed kid at the playground today
Oh man - I am glad she is ok.
I hear ya about the seperating of older kids and younger kids. I had to leave the park many times because of the older kids running / rough housing on the smaller kids section. Not fair for the little ones who may be knocked down, stepped on etc.
I guess the parents/teachers should be more considerate.

Re: Paige was kicked by a developmentally delayed kid at the playground today
I've seen parks with separate playgrounds for older and younger, but keep in mind sometimes developmentally delayed children don't always have the gross motor to play on the larger equipment.
I'm sorry that happened
