Paint over "plastic" wood panels?
I have to paint my upstairs... It's totally outdated. I don't have the budget yet to rip the whole thing off.
We have the typical slanted roof of a levit cape upstairs. The bottom part (flat wall) is this ugly dark brown plastic panelling.
I would like to paint over it at this point just to "update" a bit.
Can I just use a good primer (Kilz?) before I paint over it?
Do I need to sand it too?
TIA

Re: Paint over "plastic" wood panels?
My painter painted our very dark brown paneling for us. He didn't sand, he used an oil based primer. However, if you have young kids or are pregnant you shouldn't be around the oil based paint. I was preggo at the time so I stayed at my mom's for the weekend.

My painter wasn't comfortable with it. He said it wasn't worth the risk.

Use a good, high adhesive primer and you should be fine.

Re: Paint over "plastic" wood panels?
We did this in our cape. We didn't sand, just used a good primer. The primer was latex-based and it was just fine. You'll probably need to paint in each of the grooves with a paintbrush before using the roller.
It was a 2-day project for us but it made a HUGE difference. Perfect until we get a chance to really renovate the upstairs.
