Painting a fireplace?
Has anyone done it? The entire wall in my Den is red brick and I'd love to know if anyone has painted it before and how it has come out.
TIA!

Re: Painting a fireplace?
My sister had a red brick fireplace and she painted it white and it looks great. I don't have any pics, though.

Re: Painting a fireplace?
DH's cousin did this also - and it looks amazing. She used a "white glaze" type of paint and rubbed it on the bricks to lighten them... I would go to your local paint store, ask them what they recommend and test it on a small section or sample brick.
Good luck!

Re: Painting a fireplace?
We had the same thing but when we redid our den we covered most of it with sheetrock and left only a small portion around the opening to use cultured stone and put a new mantel & harth on it. We were going to paint it but alot of people talked us out of it. We couldn't b happier with the result. When I take pics I will put them up--before and after.

Re: Painting a fireplace?
I keep seeing Lisa LaPorta give this tip on HGTV. The result looked really good. They dabbed on paint that matched the walls, but didn't completely cover the brick.
Do you have an overpowering brick fireplace that sticks out like a sore thumb?
Here's an easy way to tone it down with paint. Use a rag or brush to rub a light coat of paint on the bricks, one at a time. This will give them a new tone without covering them completely. And, if you use a paint color that matches the walls, your fireplace will go from sticking out to standing out.

Re: Painting a fireplace?
We took down our brick wall and put up a wood mantle, painted white.
Here's a link to some pictures.

Re: Painting a fireplace?
our fireplace was actually painted white and we had it sandblasted because we wanted the brick. Then again, the wall is not brick so it breaks it up

Re:
I know this topic is older but I was just wondering what you did. We have a brick fireplace and are debating what we should do with it. Thanks

Re: Painting a fireplace?
we just painted our fireplace the same as the wall color as a quick fix for now...the red was just too much against the newely painted wall.
i did some research, and many sites suggested NOT to paint, as it then is a PITA to remove if you want the brick re-exposed down the line.
