Painting Ikea furntiure?

Is it possible to paint Ikea furniture? I really want to change the look of our room, but we're not in the market for new furniture right now.

You totally can. Sand it to rough it up first. Then use a primer (2 coats if you really want to do it good) Then paint. Follow up with sealer. If you want to do any distressing to the paint, do it before the sealer. Make sure you let everything dry between coats, esp before you do the sealer. I never did Ikea but I've painted enough stuff - wood and otherwise, to know that it will work. You can use polyurethane sealer but you could also use Polycrylic (Minwax makes it) which is low odor and fast drying. A few years ago before we updated our kitchen, we had the most ugly formica countertops. My SIL offered to paint them for me (I was preggo at the time) and they came out beautiful and held up till we were able to redo the kitchen. If you can paint kitchen formica and have it hold up with all the use and water, you can paint anything IMO.

There are also primers that you can use that can be painted over glossy surfaces without sanding.
