Painting Tape

I just used painting tape on the edge of a wall and then painted said wall. Should I take the tape off when the paint is still wet or do I wait for it to dry? I think I need a second coat of paint...can I leave the same tape on while I apply both coats?
I know this probably seems so basic to some of you...but this morning my brain just does not want to function.

Re: Painting Tape

I leave it on until all coats are dry. Be really careful when you pull it off though. The last time I did it, I ripped it down really fast and pulled off all the paint that was underneath it. I had to scrape, spackle and repaint the ceiling. Chat Icon Of course this was all in the week before my wedding!

Re: Painting Tape

Is it low tack painting tape? I researched this while we were painting our place. It says to take the tape off when the paint is still wet so the tape does not attach to the paint on the wall. It will if you leave it too long. But if you are painting both coats in one day it should be fine. Just pull the tape off when the second coat is wet and pull it very slowly. We didn't have any problems with the paint underneath coming off and we did it that way.

I am in the middle of painting as well! Wait for paint to dry and be very careful! Rip it off slowly. We had to "touch up" some spots as well.

We used painting tape and waited for the paint to dry. I agree about not waiting too long. I didn't have any problems with the paint coming off. Just remove the tape carefully.

me too...leave it on though b/c if it drips even a little, all your work is for naught!

Re: Painting Tape

Definitely don't wait too long to take it off! We waited too long in our bathroom and it was a huge ordeal trying to get it off. We still have some small pieces stuck on the wall to this day. Chat Icon

still painting Chat Icon
I tried both wet and dry..have to say taking it off very slow when 100% dry worked the best for me.
