I painted a few wood items for name plaques & such without primer - they turned out fine. I was toying with the idea of doing a doll house - that I would have primed.

ok great. I am preparing to paint wood letters, so didn't know if the primer was necessary

I didn't prime my wood letters. I did have to do 2 coats of the base color though. The first coat soaked right into the wood.
