Re: Should we be panicking?

I am freaking out!!! I want to cry!!!!

I just called my vet. I OPTED to do this to save my doggies lives!!! Now i want them out, and don't know what I am going to do.

I will be devastated if my dogs get sick due to this.

I am FURIOUS.

Can you change your thread title to have the word chip in it, so others will know more about the thread?

Thanks. I will let you know what my vet says.

Re: Should we be panicking?

I don't think anyone should panic.
The % of animals (lab mice and rats) that were affected were releatively small (4 and 1%).

Any time you inject a foreign body into a human or animal, you are taking a risk of rejection. Think about pins/rods used for broken bones, etc.

Re: Should we be panicking?

That's a tough call...
I don't know if I would remove the chip and run the risk of my dog never being found.
But, it's a little frightening that anywhere from 2 to 10% of the animals developed tumors.
The only thing I question is the fact that there was no control of animals that had no chips implanted....how do we know for certain that the same percentage of animals wouldn't have developed cancer?

I'm definitely talking to the vet about it though...

NEWSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok ladies!!!

I just spoke with my vet (whom I trust and love and has NEVER steered me wrong!).

He read the article and told me that they have been using the chip over 15 years in HIS office, and has NEVER seen one animal with anything remotely related to the chip as a problem. Not even an infection. NEVER.

He said he has done THOUSANDS of chips and NEVER had a problem. That he doesn't agree at all, and believes there is a larger motivation for this article and that it is misleading and misinformation.

He also said he was still going to talk with other vets and read more, but doesn't expect his stance to change.

Ladies I TRUST HIM, I have a large medical background and I always know if he is correct. I also research whatever he says when I have a problem with my dogs and he has NEVER been wrong.

So I am not worried anymore and trust whatever he has seen in his office and years of using the chip.

He said the chips are NOT new and have been around 15-20 years. So don't buy into the article. Whew, I feel so much better after talking to him. Talk to your vets and let's compare notes of what yours tell you all!!! But I trust mine and I am not worried much anymore.

:)

I think I would wait for a more reliable report. AOL isn't the best for reporting news, IMO...

I'm definitely talking to the vet about it though...

I questioned the same thing. The article very clearly uses the word "induced" cancer. Again, since there was no test control to see what the likelihood of cancer in non-chipped animals, to me this does not establish a link. It is possible that it sped the development of the tumors....

The vet also mentioned that to remove the chip would require anesthesia and surgery. I am personally not a fan of performing a surgery if I do not have to, the risk of infection and the risk of the anesthesia is too great IMO.

I definitely think that the vets should be consulted.......

Re: Panicking about this chip discovery!

I also asked my vet. He said there are many articles that come out referring to cancers that don't have good research backing them up.

There are also MANY articles that say when you vaccinate your animals they will get an injection-site sarcoma (cancer) from the adjuvants added to the vaccines, yet I will still be vaccinating my pets. If you google ‘injection site sarcoma’ you ‘ll get THOUSANDS of hits for articles.

My vet said he's been chipping for 20 years and never saw one case.

You know, all statistics can be manipulated to prove a point - any point.

I don't put any stock in this.
