Pap at first appt??? Why?

I'm late on my Pap should have had it last July, but I avoided it like the plague.

When I see my doc I'll be 11 weeks along

Will they do a pap and why?

Do I really want him scraping around down there?

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

I had one a few months before my bfp so I didn't get one at my 1st appointment. He did do an internal exam though. I'm not sure if you will get one or not, but if you are overdue than your chances are higher!

Wow - thats funny - they did that to me too. I didn't realize I was behind with my appts, with it so they took the test. They were very gentile - I think they do it as part of your routine screening.

I was comfortable with them doing it. I was actually glad that they checked my chart to see how long it had been.

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

If you are due for a PAP smear they will do it at your first appt. The scraping will not hurt the baby and it will ensure the best care for both of you.

yes you will get pap. With every pg I have always had a pap in the initial visit.
As a matter of fact my pap came back abnormal so I have to do it again after my 6 week PP appointmant. I am not worried b/c i had a yeast infection (as alwasy when I first get pg) and that is why it came back abnormal.

Perhaps every dr. is different but I am assuming you will get a pap.

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

they double checked that i was up to date with my paps at my very first appt- which I was.... i dont think the dr. would do a pap if it was unsafe or caused any problems for the baby...

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

i had one on my first visit and it was coincidentally the right time for it. it's not invasive, didn't hurt, and i think it's a good idea to go into pregnancy knowing your body is healthy.

I had a PAP done also.... Good thing - it showed a yeast infection.

Doc gave me meds, and I've been all clear (except for the CM) since! Chat Icon

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

I had a pap at my first appointment last week. I would be due for one during my pregnancy, so he wanted to make sure it was taken care of. And, he said they are done at the first appointment anyway. My Dr. told me that they can't do a pap past a certain amount of weeks or pregnancy, so it's best to get it taken care of early. He also said that it does not touch the baby, so he/she is safe.

Just another note about the pap. My dr. told me that some women bleed slightly when they have a pap or even when they have sex while pregnant. But, he said not to worry, it is normal.

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

I wasn't due for a Pap and they gave me one anyway.

Don't know why, but whatever, I know it's in my best interest.

This happened to me too, I had one done in June and then I saw my OB in November and he did another one.

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

I had one at my 1st appt. It was the 1st time going to a new doc and they just wanted to make sure everything was ok. The dr said it was informative to see if anything is going on.

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

I remember getting a pap but not at the 1st visit, maybe the 3rd visit because the 2nd visit was all the prenatal blood taken. Chat Icon

AAAAGH I hate Paps. Not that they're painful or whatever. I consider them voluntary rape
Chat Icon

I refer to that appt as the tool box appt because it feels like I'm just a moist open object to prod, poke, and scrape Chat Icon

I freaking HATE them!!!

My doc is extra gentle and very good to me and has seen me through a painful experience with my coochie, but still I hate hate anyone playing around down there. Chat Icon

Thanks for the warning at least... guess like always I just have to go through it.

You are getting a pap to ensure you don't have cervical cancer, HPV, STD's, etc. since those things can have an impact on your pregnancy. I think the rape comment is a little extreme. You ARE having a baby. There is going to be a lot more going on in that area during the next 9 months than all of us like!

Re: Pap at first appt??? Why?

Had a procedure to remove suspicious cancerous cells from HPV when I was 21

Frankly everyone is entitled to their own opinion I guess.. but for me.. I had to see that 'doctor' so freaking much after the HPV that I loathed it. You have to keep going on constant (starts every three then moves to every six months) for TEN YEARS. Finally after 10 years they gave an all clear for good. For me it was like a prison sentenced. I rejoiced when I got to go back to once a year. So yeah, to me its like voluntary rape, since I know its coming and I know I have to do it.

I know its prolly just me but having a baby is different, its a doctor visit for my child not for me. I'm just the vessel. The others are for me and are frankly humiliating and annoying. IMHO

*shrug*

Whatever, I've been through worse in my life so I guess I'll just live through it.
