Parenting related- probably the worst thing I ever witnessed as a teacher.
One of my colleagues and I met with a mom this morning. Her child (6th grade) has a lot of issues (dad was shot and killed a few years by a kid who did/is doing minimal time.)
Anyway, my student is smart but can be disrespectful. I have cut her slack and have been overly nice because I know she's struggling. But after the last incident (she cursed at me and the other teacher at different times) I felt that things were going to keep escalating so we asked for a meeting.
I got the impression from the dean and AP that the mom was going to be angry at us because she'd hinted that she felt we were being too hard on the kid. I would have preferred that outcome.
As a result, the mom has kicked my student out. Her exact words were "enjoy foster care" and then she left the room. She came back briefly and I thought she had a change of heart but she reiterated what she said.
The wind was totally knocked out of me- I could not believe what I was seeing. This child is clearly well cared for- nice clothes, hair neat, nails done- and I can't believe that a mom would do that. I had to leave to administer a state exam and I don't know what happened after but that mom seemed completely serious. I know I shouldn't feel like I had something to do with it but I do and I can't believe a parent would do that to her kid.

OMG I really hope there is more to the story and that this girl has some family to take her in. How awful of that mom.

Okay please DON'T FLAME ME!!! You have NO idea whats going on in that house. I know growing up in FOSTER care that there are just some kids parents cannot handle. My brother (god love him) was one of them. All looked great from the outside in (minus the attitude) but at home it was awful. He was doing INSANE amounts of drugs. Had been in and out of rehab thousands of times, would defy our caretakers at every chance he got, was rude, nasty and never listened. Even being his sister and watching this was like . We were with one foster home for three years. The people were amazing but he HATED them. Finally after two years of fighting for my brother they gave up. Granted these are two completly different scenarios. But you never know what goes on behind closed doors. Hopefully this isn't the case and the mother will just seek out counseling for her and her daughter. I they find a happy medium that doesn't involve her putting her daughter in FOSTER CARE.

No flames from me You're right about the closed door part- and I think the involvement of drugs makes it a different ballgame- but I don't think that was the case here. I think it also hit me because this girl is an only child and my daughter is an only child and I was just floored that this situation had deteriorated so much and wondered what I would do if I were in that position.
Anyway, found out that they are going to get outside counseling. I hope it works out.

So sad But as others have said, I am sure there is much more to this story than what you see in school.
Unfortunately, parents DO walk away from their kids. My ILS disowned DH years ago. Its sad that this poor girl is being abaondoned by her mother at such a young age though

This is one of my thoughts. I'm hoping the mom came back in again and had a change of heart.

I am TOTALLY not siding with the mom but do you think that maybe the tragic death has had an impact on her too leaving her to feel hopeless at raising this child and maybe that was the last straw? In no way do I agree with which she did/said but like other people said there may be more to the story.
I feel so bad for kids in situations like these

It is very hard to give up your child voluntarily to foster care especially at an older age. She may very well have put on a performance for everyone. I have seen this before many times.
Even with debriefing with a student, they will have said "My mom always does that then she buys me new sneakers"
