what makes me nervous about that as opposed to drinking at a backyard bbq or something is that while trick or treating kids our out on the sidewalks, crossing streets, etc and traffic doesn't stop for halloween! i am very careful as is DH driving around the neighborhoods on halloween, but there are people that aren't.
I see your concern, but my point about BBQs or something just meant that I can have a drink or two and still completely watch my DC. I would never have a drink or two and drive, but I can certainly have a drink and keep my kid from running into traffic.
FWIW, I almost hit 2 kids today. I was only doing about 15 through the neighborhood, but once was a kid who darted down the driveway and out into the street another was a child and parent who came out nowhere from behind a parked SUV in front of my car.....neither of their parents were drinking, at least that I could see.
I see the point about driving..
But, what about block parties? People drink at them all the time, IMO, this is akin to that, youknow?

kinda..except at block parties, the street is closed off. I guess no matter what the circumstance when kids are involved we have to watch our drinking. a drink or two is okay as long as people can still care for their kids. i was just surprised to see what i saw today because my parents or friends parents never did that growing up and although dd is still so small, i have never encountered that before. as long as everyone is safe i guess that's fine. i just can't see myself doing that.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I don't see anything wrong with it. If they were getting trashed then I think that would be wrong. But if a parent has 1 or 2 beers while they go from house to house I don't think it's an issue.

I also saw a group of Dads with a cooler full of booze. They weren't trashed...just having a few beers.
I don't think it's the worst thing. Like I said, they weren't drunk...they're not driving, and the Moms were also there...and not drinking.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I would be taken back if I saw one of my neighbors w/ a bottle of beer while trick or teating. It's just something I never witnessed before so if I saw it I would be like
I just asked my Dh what he thinks about it and he said that he would do it and that he thought of making a jack and coke before leaving the house today.
I guess I'm extremely square and uncool b/c I would never in a million years think to do that.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
My friends were drinking wine while we were walking around and the dad's had a beer. I guess I don't see the big deal. They weren't pulling a cooler but drinking nonetheless. If it was white wine I would have been drinking too.

I ate a boatload of candy and felt a little woozy. I bet the drinkers were in better shape than I was.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I don't see the big deal and I think its common. When we celebrate in Pittsburgh with my ILs, the guys walk around with beers. This year is the first time in our new neighborhood and I saw tons of people doing this today. I don't think anybody is getting wasted and not being cautious with their kids but just having a beer or two with friends as they walk (not drive) around the neighborhood just as you would do at a block party...

Totally. There was one store at our treat or treat street this year that had "adult beverages" for us and popcorn and balloon animals for the kids. You can bet I had one and don't feel badly about it one bit.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I've also known a group of parents (in Smithtown) who pulled a cooler full of drinks in a wagon and chug-a-lugged while TOTing.
While I don't see it as something I'd ever do, I guess I can see some of the other posters' points of view.
I guess I'm on the fence on this one. I just wanted to respond that it goes on in Smithtown too. Probably everywhere!

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
Uh oh!
I ToT with my kids in West Sayville yesterday. With a large group of people. At one friends house, he came out with a bowl of candy for the kids and a bowl of Stella for the adults. It was a joke, it was funny, 4 of our group took a beer. I didn't for one second think - "Holy Crimminy! My friends have all turned into low lives who care more about having a BEER than hanging with their kids!". Each one of the parents in that group is extremely loving, attentive people and not a single one is an alcoholic and most don't even drink regularly. MOST of their days/evenings are spent devoted to their children. So it would be massively unfair of me to judge them for drinking a beer while spending time with their kids... because ALL of their time is spent with their kids.
Also.. if this group was south of Montauk between West and Atlantic, it was probably another group of friends of mine who had gone out ToT earlier (without adult beverages) - but had been invited to a party on West and decided to walk the coolers (one with beer and one filled with juice boxes for the littles) over and let the kids show their costumes off to a few neighbors/friends that hadn't been home earlier on the way. And since 2 of the people don't drink they didn't have beer in THEIR cups. I don't know if that was the group you saw or if knowing more of the story would make a difference if it was them. But... that's just a little story about drinking and ToT from my perspective.

I know a woman in Sayville who was going out with her (elementary school aged) kids and DH and a group of families with a wagon and cooler as well. She and her husband are AWESOME parents and they're also a ton of fun to hang out with. Both kids and adults have a good time and no one got hurt.

I didn't see this yesterday and I've never seen it (but this is my first time trick or treating in about 25 years). But isn't it illegal to walk around with an open container of alcohol? I'm pretty sure it is in Brooklyn.

I really don't see the big deal...but then again....I do believe this group of people were my friends
If the group was drunk...totally different story...but I know them, they wouldn't be, especially with kids around
