Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!

We went trick or treating today with neighbors. My DH and my neighbor had about 2 beers each (but did bring extra under the stroller lol)
I dont really see a big deal about it. In fact, most people I know or see out trick or treating do this. It has nothing to do with being bored - it's just the parents having a good time as well as the kids and no one's driving.
Exactly. What's the big deal? I'm guilty. I guess I'm the worst mother of the year. Nobody got wasted and nobody was driving. The kids had a great time.
ETA: nevermind parents drinking, I was shocked at how many kids don't say thank you!! And the parents don't remind them to. I may have been a mother with a beer in her hand, but my 2 year old def. said thank you at every house.

I didn't see this yesterday and I've never seen it (but this is my first time trick or treating in about 25 years). But isn't it illegal to walk around with an open container of alcohol? I'm pretty sure it is in Brooklyn.
that's what the red cups are for!
while I don't have kids yet- this is something our group would totally do
I never thought of it before- but it's a great idea

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
Wow...way to pass judgement. Where they trying to bring your children over to the darkside by making them have a sip? What is the big deal...I have a beer almost every night I take DD for a walk, including while trick or treating. I was not smashed, I had a pumpkin ale which I quite enjoyed. I suppose you wouldnt be the type I would hang out with so you stay on your side and Ill stay on mine. We are ADULT PARENTS who can choose to have a beer after a long day, or maybe just bc we like the taste. Nobody needs to explain it to you.

This post can certainly turn into one big joke BUT dont forget this is not the bigger population. I am SURE there are MANY people behind the scenes on LIF and in the general population that MOST DEFINITELY agree with the poster and dont want to get involved on here. With that said, I think comparing parents walking down the street with beers in hand vs a toddler not saying thank you at a door is not a bit far fetched BUT VERY FAR FETCHED. Thats something I dont see anyone saying RELAX too. I am sure the child didnt think "How can I be disrespectful to my neighbors"...they are just kids... My dd said thank you to all doors ..WHY...bc I was up there with her... All the judging is ridiculous. It's Halloween... Did you have fun??? I had fun!

I guess I am a dud too- it would never occur to me. It's an activity for kids. I have never seen parents drink at birthday parties for kids (and maybe this is unusual too?) and to me it's sort of the same principle. But then in general DH and I seldom drink around our DD.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I should add that I really don't have an opinion either way. I laughed because I do think things get silly and out of hand sometimes on these boards (a la the Suri Cruise post), and turn into people passing judgment. The fact that we are all on here as parents looking to help one another is a great thing. I wish it could be that way all the time.
Right now I am PG so drinking is out of the question for me. DH and I are not typically big drinkers so I can't really imagine us TOT and drinking around town. But it's not because I think it's necessarily bad or wrong, just my idea of drinking (when not PG) is having a glass of red wine with dinner. I've mellowed out a lot over the years.
I don't have an issue with it as long as the parents are being responsible. As long as the kids are safe and the parents aren't stumbling around drunk, I don't see it as an area for concern.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I don't know if I fully understand this......
While the child is treat or treating - the parent is walking with them drinking a beer?? Or are they carrying the beer in the stroller, bag etc... and drink the beer at someone else's house?
Okay - I read through the replies. Wow - I've never seen a parent drinking a beer while their child is trick or treating now or ever (even when we were kids). I guess im with the other poster - for me trick or treating is for kids and there is a time and place for everything. If your cutting the grass or washing the car and have a beer no problem - but when your out in public with your children and among other children and parents (especially for treat or treating) - i just don't find it appropriate to be drinking a beer. JMO.
Also wanted to add - if the beer is in a cup - and no one knows whats inside and there are responsible adults around the children - then i guess it wouldn't bother me. Its more of the physical beer bottle holding around the kids that would bother me.

I know I am in the monirity here, but I would be taken aback to see parents drinking while trick or treating. To me it is a holiday for children and drinking is not an activity for children. I am really surprised by the people who say it isn't like they are driving - if you are too imparied to drive aren't you also too impaired to be taking care of your children?

See.. I think that's the crux of the issue. If the parents are 'impaired' or shitfaced or falling down drunk - it's not appropriate. BUT in my opinion that's not appropriate whether they are trick or treating, at a barbecue or just hanging out in the backyard. I haven't met anyone who thinks it's perfectly fine for both parents to be hammered in front of their kids. But a couple of beers while they are walking around the neighborhood? I'm sorry.. I just don't get that it makes anyone a bad or inattentive parent. If the OP had said that the kids were running in front of moving cars or the parents were letting them run across the street without looking.. or otherwise showed that they weren't paying attention or were ignoring the kids.. I'd have a problem. But from that post I didn't get that the kids were in any danger or that the parents were somehow being negligent.

Well in our case there were parents that werent drinnking. And my husband would not be too impaired to drive after one beer anyway....or two or three for that matter (even though I wouldnt let him!)

why does this BOTHER you? Are they walking your children around? Really...there certainly must be more things to be concerned about in life then what your neighbors are doing amongst themselves.

See..I don't think that "a few beers" is impaired...if I saw a shitfaced parent TOTing, then that would be upsetting, but a few social drinks..whats the harm?

Im just personally offended by this statement, this post was what do you think about drinking while trick or treating......there is a HUGE difference between having a drink or two and going for a walk, than there is between having a couple of drinks and getting behind the wheel. Im certainly NEVER going to drive my children around after Ive been drinking, AT ALL. Im offended by the implication, that bc I choose not drive my child around while drinking that at other times while Im drinking that it also infers that Im not properly taking care of my child whether its at a party, ToTing, a BBQ or just with dinner cb I have been drinking.

BC then they could turn out like my DS, who the other went into the fridge took out a beer and went "mommys beer, I want a beer too" Im such a a bad parent bc Ive held a beer bottle in front of my DC that now he can identify one and **gasp** knows that I drink it!

To me its not the best example to have parents taking their children treat or tricking and drinking beers. Like I mentioned in my previous post - if ithe beer is in a cup - and it wasn't obvious in this situation I guess it would be okay and NO - they for sure aren't taking my children treat or treating. It just doesn't sit well with me thats all. Its just my opinion and the way I feel. There is a time and place for everything - i can see drinking beers at block parties, bbqs, parties in general - but walking your children treat or treating - NO Way. The poster asked this question to get everyones opinons and so im sharing mine - im entitled to share what I feel. I have far more important things to do that be concerned about what my neighbors do - but for me this isn't something I would like to be around and so no I wouldn't have my kids treat or treating with you or any parent holding a beer in their hand. thats all

wow, I've never seen this.
I saw many trick or treaters around yesterday and none of the parents had drinks of any kind.
Got me thinking though.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I toted a beer along with me when we were trick or treating. We have a whole group of neighborhood friends and all went together and most of us brought a beer along. It was fun and we were being responsible -- one beer per adult is no big deal.
And, yes, we saw plenty of other parents doing the same thing.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I don't think it is a big deal to drink in front of children.
However, I personally don't get drinking while ToTing. I know some posters said its so the parents can enjoy themselves while the kids ToT...well I don't see how its not enjoyable sober? Is it really necessary to drink while ToTing?

Im just curious, what kind of example does it set? I really dont see how these parents are setting a bad example for their children, so Im curious.
