Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!

i am crashing <non parent here> dh and i are drinkers and after finding this i asked him what we think we would do. He said he would never take his "young" kid out with a beer and I think I feel the same way.

I would save it when I got home and had a small party afterwards with the other parents, let the kids run around in the yard or in the house where I am not too worried about cars and chug away. Just an outsiders opinion Chat Icon

Maybe I'm a dud but I've never even seen this never mind even having this idea cross my mind. I would def be taken aback had I seen it too. Different strokes for different folks I guess.Chat Icon

I guess I am a dud too- it would never occur to me. It's an activity for kids. I have never seen parents drink at birthday parties for kids (and maybe this is unusual too?) and to me it's sort of the same principle. But then in general DH and I seldom drink around our DD.

Dud x's 3 overy here b/c definetely not something I ever saw or would do myself! I even asked DH who is generally pretty liberal with these things and he said he wouldnt do it either.

ETA: DH just asked a good question, if you drink (even if it's only 1 beer) while taking your kids trick-or-treating, do you also drink at your little kids soccer games or t-ball games or other activities? Not flaming anyone, just curious.

I think there is a HUGE difference between having a beer or two, and getting so p!ssed that you forget where you are.

Huge difference. And thats the difference between a responsible drinker, and someone with a problem imo.

It's not something DH nor I would do. I went out with my sister and her kids and no one was drinking and we still had a good time.

I don't think it's something you need to do while trick or treating.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!

my dh might have 2 beers a month. he isn't a real drinker at all.

the night was fun, we don't get out much. we looked so forward to it...i guess he felt like making the night feel extra good.

he only had 2 drinks. he was far from drunk. i did not run into one drunk dad...just happy smiley dads walking the streets with cups and kids.

ETA: DH just asked a good question, if you drink (even if it's only 1 beer) while taking your kids trick-or-treating, do you also drink at your little kids soccer games or t-ball games or other activities? Not flaming anyone, just curious.

Well I can answer only for me and my own group of friends. A few of my friends DID drink a beer while walking. It never crossed my mind to drink while watching my kid play lacrosse or baseball - but I was tempted to grab a bottle of beer while ToT. I didn't drink - but that was in good part because I just don't drink very often - and I still had places to go and beer makes me tired. I guess the difference is that we all went out as a big group of friends - and the ToT became a social event. And some of the folks decided a drink would be nice.

I seriously think people personalize things WAAAAAY too much. If you don't drink in front of your child.. that's wonderful - nobody thinks you are a dud or a killjoy. If you do drink in front of your kids once in a while.. that's fine too. I don't think either way means you are a better or worse parent. I seen some stone cold sober people who were snapping at their kids and pouting the whole time. Are they superior because they didn't have a cup of wine or beer in their hand?

Does anyone NEED to drink while ToT with their kids? I don't think so. Does anyone NEED to drink EVER???? Nope. But some people choose too. If the kids are safe, nobody is in danger, everyone is having a good time then I don't think it is ANYONE elses business who decides to drink or not.

ETA: nevermind parents drinking, I was shocked at how many kids don't say thank you!! And the parents don't remind them to. I may have been a mother with a beer in her hand, but my 2 year old def. said thank you at every house.

I'm glad you mentioned this...not one child said 'trick or treat' and not one said thank you. Terrible!

thats not a good question at all......parents arent out together socailizing and havig a good time, they see trick or treating as a time to get out with the kids, mingle with your neighbors, etc. Going to your kids soccer game after school and drinking on the field isnt the same thing at all.

I think everyone just needs to get off their high horse. Who the hell cares if parents have a beer if they are out with their kids.......I CANNOT believe the things people judge other parents over.

I know I am in the monirity here, but I would be taken aback to see parents drinking while trick or treating. To me it is a holiday for children and drinking is not an activity for children. I am really surprised by the people who say it isn't like they are driving - if you are too imparied to drive aren't you also too impaired to be taking care of your children?

I was one of the posters that said 'it isn't like they were driving'. I don't think having one or two beers is too impaired to take your children ToTing. But I personally wouldn't drive after one or two beers...that's just me.

If you went to a neighbors BBQ, wouldn't you have a couple of beers while your kids play...then walk home? I know it's different b/c yesterday was Halloween...not a BBQ. I just don't see the big deal in having 1 or 2 beers.

If parents are doing shots and getting plastered...that's way out of hand. But I didn't witness anything of the sort.

Believe it..
If you can't believe THIS.. just wait until you start going to PTA meetings. You'll be shocked at the variety of things that get said. It makes me sad that sometimes parents seem to want to gain moral superiority at the expense of other parents. And always in the most subtle of ways with caveats like "Well that's fine for YOU.. but I would NEVER..."

My questions was truely just a question out of curiosity. I am not judging any of the parents on here. I could care less if you drank while ToT...everyone is entitled to do what they want.

But why would a parent not be able to express what they would or wouldnt do? If I choose to do something and another parent doesnt do the same thing b/c it doesnt work for them, I would not feel that she was judging me. I would just think she has a difference in opinion.

We may parent our children differently, but ultimately all have the same goal.

Wow...way to pass judgement. Where they trying to bring your children over to the darkside by making them have a sip? What is the big deal...I have a beer almost every night I take DD for a walk, including while trick or treating. I was not smashed, I had a pumpkin ale which I quite enjoyed. I suppose you wouldnt be the type I would hang out with so you stay on your side and Ill stay on mine. We are ADULT PARENTS who can choose to have a beer after a long day, or maybe just bc we like the taste. Nobody needs to explain it to you.

Whoah harsh. I was not saying the parents were loaded or that they weren't taking care of their kids. i had just never seen this or heard of this before and it totally shocked me. guess it's not as strange as i thought it was since so many people seem to do it. I never mentioned anything about having a beer after a long day. I do this as well. We don't have to hang out don't worry, I'll stay on my side.

It's not the words.. it's the subtext. I was referring to in person conversations at PTA meetings, not talking about on boards where you can't HEAR the way it's said or see the raised eyebrow or feel the chill coming off a mother who is CLEARLY passing judgement although her mouth says otherwise.

I don't mind anyone telling me that they have a different way of doing things or why they do it this way instead of that way. But I take GREAT offense to the idea that whatever I am doing is wrong or stupid and that I am somehow less of a parent because I do x, y or z. We are all doing what we think is best and what works for OUR families.

On the boards.. I try to assume that people are genuine when they say that that they aren't judging but they wouldn't/couldn't do this or that.

I agree....Plus wouldn't being a good role model for your kids include not engaging in illegal activity? Isn't drinking on public roads illegal?

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!

I was at a friend's house yesterday and saw it while we were outside and it did surprise me.

I wouldn't do it, but my concern with these people is that there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood, so everyone, including the very young children, was walking in the street. I don't think the parents were trashed, but I think even one or two beers can make you less alert and I just think it's too dangerous. And I am guessing that the moms and the dads were drinking, because the moms brought the kids up to the door with a cup in hand.

I had my pumpkin ale once I got back to the house. Chat Icon

Have to go now....my crack pipe is waiting for me. Might as well right since engaging in illegal activites are all one umbrella offense. No more beers from me, if smoking crack is the same offense legally, Im selling myself short sticking to just a beer. Chat Icon

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!

People need to chill out and stop judging each other. My god.

If someone wants to have a beer or two while WALKING around the neighborhood with their children - then so be it.

They are not driving in a car. They are not setting a bad example for their kids. They are enjoying a nice cold beer.

If they were falling down drunk, causing problems then that would be another story - but cut these parents some slack.

Imagine if everyone were to judge your every single move as a parent. I'm sure there would be plenty of things people wouldn't agree about. To each his own!

Thank you, I cant believe the parental judgement being thrown around on here bc some parents had a BEER!

They are setting bad examples, breaking the law, its the same as drinking and driving, might as well do it on the soccer field, come on.....they were having a BEER.

Taking this even further for all who are against it...how about the parents who SMOKE in front of their kids. Is that better? And you see that ALL the time. Hmmm...let me see...I'm drinking a beer and my child isn't affected at all, and I'm safe, not driving, etc. etc. , or smoking a cigarette and the child is inhaling the second hand smoke??? Would LOVE to hear responses Chat Icon

Good for those parents for actually walking with their children! I noticed quite a few young kids running around all by themselves.

I don't see anything wrong with having a beer or two while out trick or treating as long as they are not getting sloppy and they are doing it responsibly.
