Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
I've never actually witnessed this, but I just wanted to say: best.idea.EVER. DH and I will be doing this next Halloween
Seriously, whats the big deal?? If you drink at home or at parties around DC, whats the difference in doing it while TOTing? If you're not wasted, who cares? Parents are allowed to have a good time too. Having a drink or two doesnt mean you're ignoring your child or setting a bad example. People need to lighten up and remember that just because you became a parent doesnt mean your life ended and you cant have fun anymore

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
Someone posted on here if it was legal to drink on the street. I have to say yes because when there is a fireman's parade in the town I live in it actually begins in front of my house & every year I get a call to see if it's ok for them to set a table up by my mailbox for their food and drinks & let me tell you, they had all kinds of beer and not even in orange cups. They were having a good time and they all cleaned up after themselves. When the parade started they were walking pretty straight from what I could see
I wouldn't be shocked if I saw parents having a beer while trick or treating. I know if my DH saw it he would be asking for one. It's all about being responsible when drinking.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
There is a small detail that I don't think anyone mentioned...halloween fell on a Saturday this year, which I think means it was an opportunity for the parents to be social as well as the kids.
The other thing I want to mention is my never say never policy. Who knows what tomorrow brings!

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
didnt read the responses but why would you assume it was alcohol they were drinking?
Actually I was holding a red solo cup with COFFEE in it while trick or treating ( i ran out of disposible coffee cups & was desperate for a cup of coffee!) wow- maybe other parents thought I was drinking alcohol???!!!

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
While trick or treating, a bunch of neighbors were pushing a grocery shopping cart covered in a dingy banket and a tap sticking out on top......they were concealing a keg...last year they pulled a cooler but i guess that wasn't enough beer for them.
I didn't mind it...and it seemd like no one else in the neighborhood cared or was offended either.

ETA: DH just asked a good question, if you drink (even if it's only 1 beer) while taking your kids trick-or-treating, do you also drink at your little kids soccer games or t-ball games or other activities? Not flaming anyone, just curious.
I seriously think people personalize things WAAAAAY too much. If you don't drink in front of your child.. that's wonderful - nobody thinks you are a dud or a killjoy. If you do drink in front of your kids once in a while.. that's fine too. I don't think either way means you are a better or worse parent. I seen some stone cold sober people who were snapping at their kids and pouting the whole time. Are they superior because they didn't have a cup of wine or beer in their hand?
Partial quote above
THIS is the crux of every debate on LIF. If someone has a stance that is opposite to yours everyone personalizes it and gets all defensive.
For me, I only went up and down my small block(which is a dirt road and has like 10 houses) so my neighbors could see the babies. I did consider having a beer, but didn't because I'd just rather wait until they're in bed. One beer, to me, is like having a soda. No impact at all.

The thought to do something like that while trick or treating has never crossed my mind. Personally I think, why can't you just enjoy the time out with your kids?
Now, if I was sitting on my steps handing out candy I may have a drink in a cup (though not likely lol). But when walking around? That strikes me as odd. Never heard that before.
ITA with you.

I see nothing wrong with it. Geez, check out the celeb board, Brad and Angie *seem* to be drinking while TOT. And yes, I would have had a drink too if we went TOT. I will have a drink/s with him there at a function. No biggie.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
Wow.. i couldnt read all the replies.
I think its a personal choice.
#1 I know if you hung out with me, two coolers would be minimum. I over prepare. I'd like a cooler of non alcoholic and one with foods or a few beers for the guys (one each).
#2 I wouldnt drink
Im sorry I'm paranoid.
I know i know one or two drinks doesnt make you trashed, woosy, tipsy, etc.
But its proven fact that people NEVER feel woosy, tipsy or trashed on one or two of any drink, but reality is you are .. lets say... relaxed.
Im too high strung. At home is different (slightly) but out and about, no way jose!
Just takes a second of slowness and your kid is off. The fear I have in my soul is I wont react fast enough to whatever may happen. Id always blame myself for that one drink (wine for me, thank you). I feel like I'd want to be 'comfortable' in a neighborhood I know but the honest answer is, I do NOT feel comfortable. Its always when you think you are 'fine' that you are most at risk. Its a fact that's supported that most accidents happen close to your home cause you feel comfortable.
I know.. Paranoid freak
Can't help myself.
If my friends want to drink, fine. Have fun, I'll even keep your beers cold, but I won't.
I don't think less of a parent who drinks, just think they are braver than me. I dont feel regret that I can't drink. I find that I'm very nostalgic with AJ. I want to remember, enjoy and fully experience every moment. LOL every laugh, bump, scrape, cry, giggle, sneeze, twirl. haha
I let her live her life and I am there if she needs me but I love watching her. I guess cause my own mom pretty much didn't that I find myself wanting to do so much more. And now that I type that, I remember my mom drinking or having parties for halloween and we (the kids) had a blast.
Its not 'wrong' Just not for me

ITA with this... Halloween is for everyone. Doesn't mean you have to go out and get wasted. Just enjoying walking around with a drink. Let me add... growing up my parents had wine with dinner just about every night. Their friends are the same way and we'd get together with other families on the weekend the parents would drink and the kids played. No one got wasted. Everyone was having a good time. I never thought they were a bad influence. I grew up fine and didn't really start to drink till I was in college (which has nothing to do with my parents). Not an alcoholic... I enjoy wine once in a while with dinner or a beer BBQ'ing in the summer with friends. DH and I will raise our son the way we grew up.

Same exact here. Not judging anyone, I just wouldn't do it (but again, I'm not a drinker). I never even knew people did this.

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
Sorry, but this one is deserving of an -
I personally don't see the issue here at all - ADULTS were drinking alcohol. In my house, alcohol is simply a drink for the 'grown ups' - "Sorry honey, this is Mommy's drink, you are not allowed to have this" - End of story - We don't put it away just b/c there are kids around -
My friends had a Halloween party for the kids - It started at 3:00 - One cooler was full of juice boxes, the other was full of beer ....So what?
It's not like they were handing out 6 packs to instead of M&M's !!
And don't kid youself - Just b/c you start of finish your commentary with "I'm NOT judging, *I* just would NEVER do XYZ" doesn't take away from the fact that you ARE judging -

Re: parents drinking while kids trick or treat!
Guilty, at least DH and the other dad's we were with. Stayed behind to give out the candy. When the men got home, my BIL was even asking his neighbors if they needed a re-fill when the stopped by with their kids. It was one big block-neighborhood party. Aslong as everyone was drinking responsibly no big deal.

See I don't get this.
Just because I say "I wouldn't do it" automatically means I'm judging someone who does something I wouldn't?
So am I just not to give my opinion?
How does one give an opinion without being accused of judging?
I'm not being a smart a$$ ...I'm really curious.
ETS: FWIW...I don't think anyone needs to explain why they do or don't do something.

Giving your opinion by saying "I wouldn't do that" or "I'm not comfortable with that" is simply making a statement and leaving it at that -
Judging is saying "it's fine for you, but I"D NEVER DO THAT ....." KWIM?
Well, thank you so much for your approval that you think it's fine for me to screw up my kid, but you would NEVER do such a thing ........
