Passing the Baby Around!!!

VENT!!!!
Does anyone else get peeved at this. I know my family is excited cause Nicholas is the First Grandchild. But he hates to be passed from person to person.

He ends up getting annoyed after a few minutes and cries. My aunt and grandmother actually have small arguements about who is holding him next. It is unbeliveable. I know they mean well, but it gets frustrating espcially when he is overtired and just wants his mommy to put him to sleep.

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

We hosted Thanksgiving yesterday, and I certainly couldn't cook/clean and hold the baby. She was like a hot potato being passed around between grandmas, great-grandma, grandpas, cousins, aunts, uncles. She didn't make a peep...she would look at everyone, look around the room and fall asleep in anyone's arms. I thought it was cute!

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

When Emily was little she also hated being passed around. I was convinced that all of my aunts probably thought she was a really cranky, crying-all-the-time baby, when she certainly wasn't. It was just that she didn't like all of the people being all over her.

The good thing is that hopefully by next Thanksgiving he'll eat up the attention!

Ella doesn't mind. I don't think I held her for more than a few minutes yesterday. We were hosting, so the grandma's & aunts were fighting over her.

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

It's so like that for our baby, but he doesn't seem to mind. Everyone wants to hold him, which I completely understand. As long as he's quiet I allow it, but when he gets fussy I go and take him from whoever to sooth him. He'll usually only get really fussy when he's hungry and I'm the only one who can help him out. I think the whole baby passing thing should depend on the baby. Some kids don't mind being passed around and others do. You have to do what's right for you and your child. Don't worry about coming across as rude. If your baby needs to be with you or needs to take a nap, then just tell people to lay off. Who cares what they think/say. You're the one who will have to deal with a cranky, overtired baby when they all get to go home.

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

This never bothered me at all. If the baby gets cranky enough, I'd just take him or her back and settle them down. I love that everyone wants to cuddle the baby

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

We've never let dd or ds get passed around. Anyone can hold them (ds is 3 1/2 now, so he passes himself around... ;) ), but they have to come from us, or at least an individual OK from us. Everyone knows that, and everyone knows that if they don't want to play our game, they don't get the baby... :) My kid, my rules Chat Icon

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

When Ava was really little, I would hate when people would pass her around, but I'm thankful now that they did because she'll easily go to anyone in my family. It really helps when I need someone to watch her or hold her for me. However, I do know when to step in and say enoug is enough. Like when she's cranky and tired and after beating it into their heads, my family does respect that.

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

YES YES YES I deal with this with my inlaws ALL THE TIME and cant stand it. DD cries and cries. On Thanksgiving my MIL had her and DD was HYSTERICAL so I said "give her to me and I'll calm her down" - my MIL refused and held on to her tighter. So I bent down and took my child from her and walked away to calm her down.

Babies HATE to be over stimulated - you have to let your family know its NOT OK.

Re: Passing the Baby Around!!!

Luckily for us, neither kid minds being passed around, so I let them be passed. I couldn't imagine what I'd do though if they didn't like it. That's got to be rough. Maybe try to arrange it so that after somebody holds him, he comes back to you for a little while before going to somebody else? It would take a lot longer to get around to everybody, but maybe he'd be a little more content.
