Passport Vent (and PSA)!!
I discovered that if your passport is more than 1 year old, even something as simple as a name change requires you to apply for a new passport!! They treat it pretty much like you never had one before - you have to redo everything - application, photos ($15), $67 application fee (plus postage)
The guy did say if you are married within 1 year of the issue of your passport, they will process it for free. So if anyone has a new passport and has to change your name - do it quick!!!

Re: Passport Vent (and PSA)!!
the "free" change of name on a passport within a year will cost you:
$8 for new pics $10-$15 for fed ex or whatever carrier you use with tracking service $10 for a copy of a marriage cert (there was no chance I was sending in the original!)
total cost for the "free passport" - $30

it's a total scam! but I have to say, the process was easy enough and I had the new one within 2-3 weeks.

Is this something new?
I update mine in 2004 (passport was 3 years old at that time). I didn't pay a penny.
I just mailed it in with a name change application. They typed my new name on the back cover and sent it back to me approx 2 weeks later.

That's what I did. I got married in 2002, so I guess I did it then or early 2003. I think my passport was less than a year old because I only got it just before we left for Spain on our honeymoon.

I think so. Now you get a brand new passport, not a name change note on a page of the original.
