Patti Lupone snatches phone from texting audience member's hand during her performance
I just recently heard someone on the radio talking about how she doesn't put up with any crap from the audience and will stop mid-show to chastise an audience member if they are making too much noise. Good for her!
They were talking on the radio about someone who went up onto the stage to charge their cell phone in a stage scenery "outlet". WTH is wrong with people???

People can def be rude, I totally get that but there are times I'm texting my husband or babysitter about my kids. SOMEtimes things can't wait. I get where she was coming from but really she had no idea what was going on in this person's life so not sure I agree with her actions.

In that case I would excuse myself and text outside

I agree she cant know what's going on in ones life but
come on, there was a time when we all lived a life without cell phones and texting and the world did not come to an end, familys did not fall a part and kids/hubbys didn't go hungry.
we stepped out and used a phone.

If you have an urgent situation to deal with - don't go to a show.
Most shows have intermissions - I am sure there are very few circumstances where someone can't be out of touch for an hour, hour and a half. No excuse for texting during a show.

I agree.
Here is an interview with her and The New York Times speaking about it:
Q. So what happened Wednesday night?
A. This woman — a very pretty young woman — was sitting with her boyfriend or husband. We could see her text. She was so uninterested. She showed her husband what she was texting. We talked about it at intermission. When we went out for the second act I was very close to her, and she was still texting. I watched her and thought, “What am I going to do?” At the very end of that scene, we all exit. What I normally do is shake the hand of the people in the front row. I just walked over to her, shook her hand and took her phone. I walked offstage and handed it to the stage manager, who gave it to the house manager.
Q. How did the rest of the cast react?
A. Everybody is deeply upset by it. How can you not be distressed by this? Everybody is freaked out.
Q. If you could see it, then the rest of the audience probably could, too. It takes one screen to disrupt an entire theater.
A. I don’t know why they buy the ticket or come to the theater if they can’t let go of the phone. It’s controlling them. They can’t turn it off and can’t stop looking at it. They are truly inconsiderate, self-absorbed people who have no public manners whatsoever. I don’t know what to do anymore. I was hired as an actor, not a policeman of the audience.
Q. How did the audience react when you took her phone?
A. They got it. She was totally seen texting because she was in light. Some people gasped when I took the phone. Some people applauded.
Q. In a statement you released you said, “I am so defeated by this issue that I seriously question whether I want to work onstage anymore.” Is that true?
A. Absolutely. It’s getting worse. I’m hired to tell a story, and it takes a lot of effort and work to do that convincingly. It’s a handful of people who destroy that experience for everyone. It’s heartbreaking. Theater is not a social event.

Exactly. Good for her. If I'd been in the audience and was distracted by this nitwit I would have clapped too.

I agree with her 100%. People are so busy today on their phones they are missing THE MOMENT and not fully enjoying the experience.

This. I totally feel her on this.
I'm not an actor but I'm a professional and motivational speaker - it is an aspect of my career. I do between 90-125 speaking engagements a year. When I speak, I share a very personal and very tragic -- yet uplifting at parts -- story. It is not easy for me to talk about. I have spoken with other people from time to time. They share stories of loss - of literally losing someone in a violent manner. When they speak, they are often fighting back tears to share their stories. People in the audience, for the most part, are so moved they often cry also. They come up to us after and say it was life changing. For me, those people remind me why I do what I do.... And then you get those few people who sleep, snore, text, watch movies on their phone, surf the internet, etc. etc. etc.
And for those people - even though thank GOD they are in the minority, it IS getting worse, and for those people - they just take the wind out of your sails SO bad. It's very personal and very hurtful. It's awful

I get her feelings but no. You don't take someone's property.
And actually sometimes getting up is more distracting than a text on the phone (quickly of course)

Re: Patti Lupone snatches phone from texting audience member's hand during her performance
This is our society. We are hiring kids who feigned really wanting to go to college in their essays and then cheated, texted, surfed, and skipped their way through school to grab a diploma.
No one respects theater, education, anything any more.
It's so vile.
I try not to hire people who seem like that "type."

Actors should stop shows in the middle and call out these rude people in front of everyone. Until the rest of us get so fed up that this behavior becomes socially intolerable again.

Re: Patti Lupone snatches phone from texting audience member's hand during her performance
This wasn't a case of someone sending a quick text or 2 and putting their phone away. The woman was texting throughout the show. If I paid $150 - $200 for a theater ticket and the person next to / in front of me was doing that, I'd be pi$$ed. It's very distracting as an audience member. I can only imagine how distracting it could be to an actor
