Pavers/Blue Stone vs Walkway set in sand?
Not sure of the term for a walk way where you have larger stones set in sand, instead of more traditional masonry-- but anyone know what an approx price difference would be?
We just got a quote for 10,000 to redo our bluestone walkway or 8,000 for pavers (it's VERY long). Aside from demo, would we save that much money if we did the sand route?

Are you sure those quotes aren't for both being set in sand?

Re: Pavers/Blue Stone vs Walkway set in sand?
The foundation should always be concrete and then sand on top of that for setting the stones. My friends spent thousands to do their backyard in pavers and did sand only the same time we did ours with a concrete subfloor. Well 7 yrs later ours looks like the day we did it and they are ripping theirs up because it's ruined, it settled and collapsed all over the place. They are pouring concrete before anything now.

thanks for the info... is there any other cost effective options for a walk way? Ours is so long, and so old-- it has to be done, but 10K is a lot to swallow for a walkway.

Actually in my opinon using concrete as a foundation as not a good option. Frost heaves can cause the cement to buckle and crack the best substrate for a foundation is crusher run (start pack, crushed limestone) after the crusher run is laid and packed down then the sand can be put down and the pavers laid in the sand

Re: Pavers/Blue Stone vs Walkway set in sand?
If done properly RCC (recylcled crushed concrete) is better. it provides drainage and movement needed for our temperature shifts.
Our patio is on RCC and looks perfect - our back has 3 steps and it works out great
RCC is about the 1/3 the cost of concrete.
If you need to build up large steps then you need concrete - our front steps are brown version of blue stone and they are attached to concrete - but it 6 steps to our front door

Look at my friends whose whole property needs to be redone because they took the cheap way out and used a crushed base. They are spending thousands now to redo it and they are first pouring a base so they get no settling. They literally had light boxes that caved sideways because of the aggregate base. Just my $.02

We have a cracked blue stone walkway that is not set in concrete. I agree with others if you are doing a large area you should set in concrete. Image Attachment(s):

Our patio has RCC, then a concrete slab with travertine set in sand. I'm pretty certain our front walkway (reclaimed brick in a herringbone pattern) is set the same way.

how did you find this has held up? It is essentially just the walk way, but we will need to redo the stoop/front patio. I would be happy with this look especially since we can still use the blue stone.
Our walkway is prob about 3 feet wide or so, but it's gotta be at least 100 feet long, plus the stoop and front patio section.
Here is just one pic I have from our first halloween here.. this is even halfway down from the door!

Re: Pavers/Blue Stone vs Walkway set in sand?
A concrete foundation doesn't make it necessarily better or worse. If a concrete foundation is done poorly, it will heave, and move any pavers that are on top of it. We've all seen bad concrete jobs that are no longer level.
As long as the foundation is done properly, all the experts are basically split down the middle as to whether to use a sufficient RCA/gravel base, or a concrete base. If half of all experts say RCA or gravel is sufficient, I think it's a very valid method to use.

Re: Pavers/Blue Stone vs Walkway set in sand?
The pieces of blue stone are very thick and they are set in the ground. I dont think it is going to move. We are going to be planting a ground cover in between them next week to finish the look.
I think this would look great for your walkway based on the picture, very natural. We have travertine for our patios so we used this to break up the look.
Blue stone is more $$ than pavers so this walkway will prob be more.
