Peanut allergy?

So DS does not like peanut butter, not for lack of trying. Many times he has taken a bite and after chewing spit it out. He likes pecan sandie cookies and has eaten some other things that include nuts.

Tonight, by accident he ate 3 peanut butter m&m's. He made a funny face, tried to spit it out, but I told him to just swallow it and wash it down with water.

Now, coincidence or not a few minutes later he said his belly hurt (which he often tells me and its nothing). he was leaning over the dining room chair and then said, mommy look at my lip.... and part of his upper lip was swollen (at first I thought maybe he banged it or bit it). He had been coughing on & off all day, but now he is constantly clearing his throat and coughing, but when I asked him he said it was not itchy. So we run to CVS to get some benadryl which he promptly takes. 5 minutes later in the car he starts vomiting. I get him upstairs and change him and he says he is itchy. The more he scratches he starts to get hives. By now, I am starting to freak and waiting for the ped to call back. But besides being itchy he is singing and dancing and back to his usual playful self.

She called back within 3 minutes and told me to give him a double dose of beandryl, watch him for 20 minutes and if he complains of itchy throat to rush him to the ER. She said it sounded like a food allergy, and that next week for his 5 year old check-up when they take blood they will also test for food allergies and I should start carrying an epi-pen.

DS does have seasonal allergies and he went for allergy testing, they told us at that time he was only allergic to a certain type of tree and grass. I could swear I asked if he was tested for food allergies....

I am sooo upset about this. I had food allergies growing up and I do not want that for my son. Chat Icon

Does anyone's DC have peanut allergies? How life altering is it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Please tell me that this is all just one big coincidence that his eczema was acting up because he has some stomach virusChat Icon

Poor baby Chat Icon I hope he is feeling better and that you are OK. I don't know much about nut allergies, so I'm no help on that front. Just wanted to send you all a Chat Icon

Fun thing about it is....For some reason children with this type of allergy are very picky eaters. My son won't even eat the common things kids like candy, cake, popcorn and ice cream. So I guess in away that is a little protection of there own. I think with it being so common now people are a little more careful about giving children things. Our day care is a peanut free center. I was a nervous wreck when we found out but I have read things and I am much better now. Check out this book. Food Allergies for Dummies. Great book.

ALso before he was tested I could swear that he ate peanut butter. I used to eat peaniut butter and apple all the time. With no reaction so.......Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Not that I would give it to him now.

You can live a normal life with it. My sons dr. has it and he is in his 60s.

thanks. I know the allergy doesnt usually show until the second time you are exposed. BUt I know its been in his mouth more than twice. He vehemently HATES peanut butter so it would make sense if thats why. I feel so guilty for making him "just swallow it and wash it down with some water"Chat Icon

ETA: I guess now I will just be grateful he doesnt like PB instead of trying to make him like it
