Re: Ped. said to try and keep DD up during the day but.....
Awe - Lucas is not much older than her and he sleeps ALL DAY except for like 2 hours when he is wide awake after just getting up and he sleeps all night. I wouldn't worry about it unless she is up at night. Even then I would keep things dark and quiet. Just during the day be as loud and active with her as possible. THey are so little right now all they do is sleep.

Try to give her baths and play with her to keep her awake. It's tough because all they want to do is sleep. You'll get her on a schedule soon!

My DD is 4 weeks old and never wants to sleep. You really shouldnt keep her up i dont think. My DD becomes overtired quickly and the book Healty Sleep Habits, Healthy Child says not to keep them up for more than 2 hours at a time. They can become overtired.

Since she is still young I would let her sleep during the day but make sure the room she is in isn't dark. Keep a light on or maybe the window shade a little. Then at night make sure it is dark. I did this even in the hospital and I found it helped. You will start to notice that she will start to stay up a little bit more between feedings and when she is up try talking to her. I use to sit on the couch with my knees bent and would sit DS in the crease and we would talk.

Re: Ped. said to try and keep DD up during the day but.....
I used to let Steven sleep during the day as much as he wanted. Babies eventually figure it out.
I am a firm believer of letting the baby sleep. If you keep her up during the day, that does not mean she will sleep better at night. She will just get overtired then it will be even more difficult to fall asleep.
I think DS was about 3 weeks when he got his days straight. Here are some things that I did to help him get on track:
-- when she wakes in the middle of the night, do not put on the TV and use minimal lighting.
-- in the morning, open the blinds, make the house bright and change her clothes. Even if you put her into another sleeper. this will help as she gets older...once you wake up, nighttime is over and it's out of jammies.

I think your ped. is nuts! Babies dont have routines that young. I let Gillian be and now at 3 months she fell into her own schedule. Your dd is just too young IMO...

Re: Ped. said to try and keep DD up during the day but.....
My ped said the same thing. He said to change her diaper often, leave her with no clothes on, play music or the tv loud, lots of lights on, talk to her, etc. to get her to wake up. He even said to put a cool washcloth on her chest to get her good and mad.
I wasn't able to do it, and by 6 weeks she'd figured it out on her own. Andy took about 3 or 4 weeks.

I agree. DD basically slept whenever she wanted, self regulated & got on her own sched.
