Pediatric Dentist

I've been fearing going and procrastinating too. Chat Icon

DS has sensory issues and he can be very protective of his face and mouth
Doesn't really eat much either so I can't imagine he'd be good at the dentist.

He's 2.5 now and I feel like we should go.
Any helpful hints?
He's not great at the Ped's either. DH or I have to hold him and the Ped will do what he has to do (even though he tries to distract DS w/ cute voices and toys doesn't always work)

Re: Pediatric Dentist

where are you looking? Mine is out in Wading River. I think he may have an office in Rocky Point.
Dr. Campisi....they are GREAT with kids with special needs.
we still have to hold him down for cleanings.

thanks

Erica i'm in jersey too, bergen. There are many dentists who specialize or who have experience with special needs kids with sensory issues. DS is super sensory when it comes to his mouth, we haven't gone yet but plan to find a dentist who is used to kids on the spectrum or with sensory issues. It will take ALOT more than distraction to make it an even bearable experience.

Thanks!
We're in Monmouth so a little too far for a Ped Dentist. I'll look some up and get reviews. Maybe ask some locals in the area.
Maybe my Ped would know too. He gave me a list so I'll see who is under our plan first as well

They're all over, not just in Bergen. Next time you're in your ped's office or your local library see if there's a copy of NJ Special Parent, it's like a mini-mag with all special needs info. Drs, therapists, groups, classes, camps, etc. for special needs kids.

Re: Pediatric Dentist

We just went and he has cavities. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We went to a pediatric dentist who has experience with special needs kids and was recommended by 2 different moms of special needs kids. Some things he does/did that I think help:

Makes appointments very early in the morning - we were the only ones there, which made a big difference

First visit was just to meet DS, take a look in his mouth and get him used to the chair and the equipment. He asked a lot of questions about his sensory issues, what type of input he likes.

Next visit will be a cleaning and x-ray, if possible, to see how deep cavities are. If he thinks he will have to numb or sedate him, we will discuss that at that time. Following visits will be to do the work in his mouth - can't wait!

We also brought his mobigo, for him to play with/look at while he was in the chair. It did help with keeping him seated at certain points and when we had to take it, we did.

Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS is 4 and hasn't opened up yet for the dentist. Last visit though, he opened his lips to show the front of his teeth. It's baby steps. Our dentist is OK with it. She said he own daughter didn't let her look in her mouth until 4 either.

DS#1 had no issues, but they didn't have him come in until 3. (DS#2 goes to all of his appointments so he can watch)

We went to the Pediatric Dental Clinic at Stonybrook Hospital. They are familiar with children with special needs and sensory issues. Do you have any teaching hospitals near you?

This is where we go, and they are outstanding. We've been to so many pediatric special needs dentists, and they all pale in comparison.

Re: Pediatric Dentist

I am in Torrance; whenever I took my kids for dentist check up they do hassles all the way up till there. They scared from dentist dress and equipments but I got the best way to distract them like I gave them something to play or said there is a bird flowing in the window.. They keep staring at it dentist do their job.
