Pediatric dentist...what do they do at the first visit?
I want to book an appt for DD to have her first dental visit. She is 20 months now...looking to do it in another month or 2.
Can you please let me know what they have done at their first visit?
DD does not have all her teeth yet, and I think 20-22 months is alittle young for a flouirde treatment. Is it a waste of time and money to take her now? Should I wait until she is 2.5 or so?

Counted teeth and cleaned them. I can't remember about the fluoride treatment.
I would take her sooner than later. It gets them used to going to the dentist.

Re: Pediatric dentist...what do they do at the first visit?
DD is 19 months and I can not imagine her sitting through a dental check up. She freaks out when they check her ears or examine her in anyway at the Dr. She screams, thrashes, stiffens up etc. It's horrendous
How would they keep her mouth open? She would clamp it shut or bite them- I just know it. It's hard enough trying to brush her teeth. I can't imagine a dentist in there examining teeth and cleaning them. No-freaking- way.
I guess we'll be waiting until she is older...

Re: Pediatric dentist...what do they do at the first visit?
I took my kids for their first visits over the summer. Ds was 3.5 and dd was almost 2. I should have taken ds sooner. He already had a cavity in his front tooth. Luckily it was small. Both kids had their teeth cleaned and counted and a flouride treatment. Ds was great. He sat int he chair and opened wide. Even had his cavity filled without a problem. Dd screamed like someone was trying to murder her. She sat on my lap and since she was screaming her mouth was open and the dentist was able to work easily lol We go for round 2 end of the month for their next cleaning. I am hoping it will go easier for dd this time.

The ped actually didn't say anything to me about it until his 3 y well visit. We went to our dentist (who is amazing) and they just counted his teeth and gave him a flouride treatment

Same!
DS went younger than I would normally take him because he chipped a good portion of his front tooth. He's being monitored for that in addition to the cleanings.
Honestly - he LOVES the dentist! He's almost 28 months & has been to the dentist twice. I actually use the dentist name to get DS to brush his teeth - he wants "Dr. Chris" to be happy.

Re: Pediatric dentist...what do they do at the first visit?
We're going this afternoon for the first time - DS is just about 2.5. We're going to my dentist , not a special pediatric dentist. I'm curious to see how he does. We've been talking it up all week!
One of his bottom teeth never grew in and I think he might have cracked one of his front teeth. The top part is discolored a little bit and I thought I saw a white line going diagonally through it.

Re: Pediatric dentist...what do they do at the first visit?
I took my DS for his first dentist visit when he was 2.5.
The dentist counted his teeth, brushed them with a toothbrush, and put flouride paste on his teeth. That was it.
She did the same thing at his 3 year visit, only added flossing his teeth.
It wasn't until he went at 3.5 that she actually cleaned his teeth and at his 4 year visit she took a full set of xrays. (apparently she is predicting that his bottom adult teeth are going to be crowded)
I think going before 2 might be a little early. But I liked taking my DS before 3 because it got him used to the whole process. I will be taking my DD for her first visit in October, just a few months before she turns 3.
