Pediatric Surgeon vs. Oral surgeon?

DS is 2 yrs old and has a gap between his teeth in the front. I can't remember the official name of it, but he has a small gum growth that hangs too low and it needs to be cut.

Our dentist said we should do it before he's 6-7 years old (when his permanent teeth come in), and I'd like to do it sooner rather than later because I'm hoping he won't remember it. Chat Icon

Our dentist thinks it may be better to go with a pediatric surgeon at Stony Brook instead of a regular oral surgeon. Does anyone have experience with this? If so, when did you do it (what age)?

TIA!

Frenectomy. I would bring him to another pediatric dentist before setting him up for the surgery. A good pediatric dentist will steer you in the right direction. Many times frenctomies are not needed when recommended. If you need a refferal for a good pediatric dentist in Commack I will give you the name of the Dr our general office refers to Chat Icon

Thank you for the official term!! Chat Icon
I'm positive a frenectomy is needed, unfortunately. We've consulted with several dentists (both pediatric and general) plus we had a consult with some people at SB's dental program. DS's is hanging significantly low, and everyone is recommending the surgery.

I'm keeping a positive attitude -- this, too, will pass. Chat Icon

I would just make sure the oral sugeon is ok to work on kids. It is a really easy procedure and nothing to be too worried about. Good LuckChat Icon

Re: Pediatric Surgeon vs. Oral surgeon?

What type of insurance do you have? Usually its covered by someones dental plan. I work for an oral surgeon and we perform frenectomy's fairly often. As stated, what they use cuts and cauterizes at the same time, very little bleeding. Usually by the next day the kids feel fine! We usually have them stay away from "crunchy" foods, chips pizza crust etc. for a few days, because it may be tender in the area but its a fairly simple procedure. If you want, call your insurance company and see if they cover procedure code D7960. Good luck!
