when do you typically meet with the pediatrician you want to use for the baby? I know I have to go and meet with one before the baby comes, but I wasn't sure when a good time to go is

Mine did not require you to meet with them first, but you could if you wanted to. A few people had recommended this ped to me and they had similar beliefs to mine. I wanted a practice that supported BFing and what not. I called them up and they said to call back when I had the baby unless I has specific things to ask the ped.

I never met mine. I didn't see the point.
I got a few recommendations, called them up to let them know I wanted to use them, and they told me to just give their name at the hospital when asked who the ped was and when the baby was born the hospital would call them to let them know.
Super easy.

I also figured that if they were THAT bad and I hated them, I could always switch down the road

Re: pediatrician

Around 7 or 8 mos. I wanted to hear the philosophies of the practice, how reachable they were, the bedside manner of doctors and staff, and also to be sure that the office was clean, etc. The visit put me at ease.

Before I had DS I met with a group at about 8 months. I only met with them b/c I didn't know anyone who used them.

When we moved, and then before I had DD, I never met with pediatricians. Just went with recommendations.

Never met mine. I already know who I wanted to use based on recommendations/location. I called them when the baby was born to set up the first appt.

Around 8 months. I got a few recommendations and went in for an office visit and "interview."

For us, we used the one my aunt uses and I trust her opinion. There have been one or two in the practice that I don't like but always have a choice once we are in the exam room.

I had set up an appt to meet him but went in to labor that day so never actually met him beforehand. I did get a ton of recommendations from friends so I felt pretty good about it. It all worked out; almost 6 years later, I love my pediatrician.

You definitely don't need to meet them. I would ask people you trust for recs. You'll find out a lot more than way (how they interact with kids, how much time they spend with each patient, wait times) than sitting in the ped's office for 20 minutes.

You do not have to go and meet peds. I never did and just went on recommendations. My ped doesn't even come to the hospital I gave birth and I actually never contacted them until after DS was born.

This. I used the same pediatrician my sister uses, so I knew he was good. I saw no need to meet with him prior.

I decided not to meet ours. They get raved reviews so I trusted other Mommies. It's just one extra thing that I decided was unnecessary.

i didn't know i didn't have to meet with mine- i have 5+ people who all use this dr, so i already know I plan on using him... definitely one less thing to do! I'll just call in a month or so and give them a heads up about my due date and that i plan on using that dr.

I went at around 32 weeks. I knew the practice as they were also my pediatrician ... but I wanted to get a feel for the office, the staff and doctors. I also had specific questions regarding breastfeeding help, vaccinations/vaccination policies/schedules. I'm in the medical field myself and I just know my issues with doctors and how I feel around them. Hell. I switched OBs 20 weeks into my pregnancy. I'm picky I guess.

I didn't meet mine. I didn't even really call around. I gave birth at stony brook so I just went to stony brook ped because that's who was in the hospital.
