Pediatrician Rec for Smithtown/Stony Brook Area?
Hi Moms!
I'm only 18 weeks, but it is currently open enrollment for our health insurance. We have the option of several different insurance plans, but we basically took the least expensive for just DH and I b/c our regular docs were covered.
Now we want to make sure that the pediatricians in the smithtown/stony brook area (commack/northport would be okay too) are good.
Can you please recommend your pediatrician? Thank you so much!

Dr. Cavanaugh...can't say enough about him...caring, professional, and very knowledgeable. I go to the office in the Huntington Medical Group but I believe they opened another office in Commack. Good Luck !!!
ETA>> Phone number is (631) 425-2110 and they are open 7 days a week.

Re: Pediatrician Rec for Smithtown/Stony Brook Area?
I know this is not in the area you asked about, but I take Hayley to Mid Suffolk Pediatrics. I go to their office in Mt Sinai but they also have one in Hauppauge. They are really nice and the Hauppauge office is open on Sundays!
eta: I like that they are open on Sundays because Hayley seems to always get sick on a Sunday. I just call and bring her right in.

Re: Pediatrician Rec for Smithtown/Stony Brook Area?
Hands down- Dr.Benitt, Dr. Rubin, and Dr.Bowers Friendly Medical Group Hallock Ave 689-6226
They are amazing with kids. Very caring. My ds had a very serious jaundice issue when he was born, At the time I had another ped who was clueless and never came up to the hospital to see my son after he told me to rush my son to the ER. My son was hospitalized the 1st time for 3 days and then then 2nd time for 4 days. I wound up faxing my ds history to Dr. Benitt. Dr. Benitt called me in my ds hospital room at StonyBrook and told me to bring my ds to his office as soon as they discharged him. The next day we were off to the office and have been there ever since.

Patsbrat- Ive had one too many disappointments with them (not commack everyone) just overall disappointed period. (the ladies that answer the phones are nasty most of the time,
they make NO sense- wanted me there within 5 minutes once or the doors would close, ( asked to be seen that evening Nicholas' ear was hurting) and I asked them to wait for me this once since Ive waited for them so many times!) once they asked me to come earlier, from 6pm, to 5pm,and I did them that favor, and waited till AFTER 6pm to be seen, with ALL THREE BOYS WITH ME... When Dr. K passed by, I gave him Luciano to hold for a while since I was tired of standing there (and I let him know it too)
today I went in for a little something I saw on Luciano's belly (no worries thank God) and they sent a student/resident in as the first person to see me. does this sound normal to anyone?
Of course the two top guys had their say and made a mini "student learning" session from my visit (and this has happened several times)... I just dont feel that undivided attention that I thought I would, since I came from a HUGE practice before this one...
Sorry to hijack the thread, this just came to mind... I wont mention the practice, anyone can FM me if youd like.
Im debating between Commack and Cavanaugh if I do switch...

Ugh! See, that was one of the reasons I chose to leave. Too many inconsistancies and too much inconsiderate behavior in THEIR part.
How's the baby feeling?

Re: Pediatrician Rec for Smithtown/Stony Brook Area?
As much as that surprises me, I can't say it's unusual. The more doctors in a practice, the more opinions you will get. I find them to be pretty much in agreement in the care of my children, but I'm sure some day this will change. You have to be prepared to trust the info that is given to you. At this time neither doctor has said or done a thing that I'm not comfortable with, but if that ever happens I'll be looking to switch. We all need to trust all the doctors we deal with, and be comfortable with their decisions. If you feel any info is not 100% for you, you should question why yousee that doctor. Conflicting opinions don't necessarily mean one is right and one is wrong.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It's something to consider.

Anna I know what you mean about that practice, we go there too, but Jenna always sees Dr. R and I really like him, the phone staff is not the friendliest and I am not too fond of the NP either.
Sorry to highjack as well, to the OP we used to to go to Mid Suffolk Peds in Happauge and they were fine, just a big practice. WE switched due to a change in insurance.

In the practices defense, it's totally normal to send a resident in prior to having the doc see you. My daughter goes to a practice that does this.

I still take my kids there, too. I am not a huge fan of Dr. R or Dr. K. We see Dr. C exclusively, whenever I can control it. Obviously for sick visits, we don't have much choice...but, with everything that I have been through w/Elena, I have been VERY pleased with Dr. C's care.

My sister has been with this group and when she moved from Nesconset still continued to use them because she loves them so much.
I use commack pediatrics, which is a different practice from teh two moms mentioned above. I too have been with them over ten years, and overall, have been very happy. They are on Commack Rd and the number is 499-8282
