Pediatrician recommendation (Smithtown/Commack) and where's the nearest Pediatric ER
We'll be moving soon. I hate leaving my doctor and Winthrop, but I can't see commuting for every illness and well visit. Someone really good with the kids and who has an open mind to working mom's/daycare (this has been a problem with 1 of the doctor's in my Ped's practice). Someone who takes reasonable preventative measures.

I'd think Good Sam is far from that area... what happens if 911 is called? I ask b/c #1 had a febrile seizure once and had to be rushed to the ER by ambulance. I'd hate to take her to St. Catherines w/ no Ped ER. Hmmm... My kids are so little. Maybe PM pediatrics, but I don't think they take 911 situations.

We go to Branch Ped. too, we usually see Dr DeSanto(LOVE HIM) and there is a PED ER at Stonybrook Hospital.

Re: Pediatrician recommendation (Smithtown/Commack) and where's the nearest Pediatric ER
I go to Commack Pediatric Partners - they are right on the commack/smithtown border. Both of the Doctors in the practice are working moms, so I don't think that they would take issue with that
When we had to take DD to the ER, we took her to Huntington. Depending where you are and the time of day, it might actually be closer than Stonybrook.
I also think (and I could be wrong about this) that if you called 911 and took an ambulance, they would take you to the closest hospital whether they have a ped unit or not.

I could not imagine getting to Stony Brook in a real emergency. I'm getting nervous. Then again I've been spoiled, we're 5 minutes from Winthrop so that's my point of reference. It may not be as big a deal as I may think, just it was so awesome being that close when she had the seizure.

It depends on where exactly you are. If you are in Commack, Good Sam is a straight shoot down the Sunken Meadow. WHen I was in the ambulance corps we'd take them to Good Sam if we were in the southern part of Commack. In general, the ambulance will take you to the closest hospital. That is the law. So if St. Cats is the closest, that's where you will go. You can always transfer to another hospital, later, if need be.

Re: Pediatrician recommendation (Smithtown/Commack) and where's the nearest Pediatric ER
Stony Brook is probably your best bet for a ped ER.
DO NOT go to St Cats if you dont have too. DS broke his leg in TWO places, they missed both on the Xray and told us to go home and put ice on it.
We go to mid-suffolk peds in Hauppauge (we live in smithtown) and they are FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PM peds is always a good option and they do handle broken bones and stitches on site.

OMG... see that's the only reason I love where I live (the rest basically stinks LOL), I know I would not want them taken to St. Cats and we have had such an emergency. Guess I'll just have to try to avoid the ambulance, even if it means rushing them myself. Or call the ambulance to see if the paramedics feel they must be hospitalized or else ASAP. I mean, even the seizure... she could have been driven once we knew she was going to live. I was just VERY freaked out, we were advised to go by ambulance but I was also 8m preggo with my second when it happened.

Smithtown pediatrics. They are also affiliated with Stony Brook in case you need the Ped ER. I highly recommend Dr. Valmassoi (pronounced val-ma-soy)ETA: In the case of a dire emergency, Good Sam has a ped ER too and is closer than stony brook.

Same. I am really happy with my ped and know at least 6 other people whose children are in the practice.

She is great but VERY busy!

What she said.
And FWIW they say in an emergency to go to Stony Brook, but they prefer us to go to Good Sam. It's really not that far.

She took DS as of 11/2009, so that may have changed

Same here. My DS actually had to be taken from the offive via ambulance to the hospital and Dr Danzi insisted the ambulance take us to Good Sam because of their ped unit. They wanted to immediately take us to St Cath's.
