They were really nice about it, and didn't comment at all when I whipped out a long list of questions at the appointment. The one we ended up going with even had appointment times set aside each month just to meet with pregnant couples.

I did something similar- I asked if any of the doctors in the group were taking new patients and could I meet with them. The woman I spoke with told me that there was already an interview time set up (at this practice they have more than one couple meet with the doctor at a time). DH and I happened to get there early so we got to meet with the doctor by himself.
I put it off- for whatever reason I felt very anxious about doing this, but the woman I spoke with was very nice. It's very routine.

Re: Pediatrician...need advice on making the call
I just called and said I am due on XX and looking for a ped for my baby. I went in and spoke to the office manager and met a doctor from the practice. It was fine.

Re: Pediatrician...need advice on making the call
I did a doctor search through my healthcare website - found a list of doctors who were conveniently located. The website was also able to tell me where they went to medical school and where they did their residency - granted, I'm a bit compulsive with research related tasks, but there are a lot of doctors in my neighborhood who were educated outside of this country and I just prefer a doctor with a US medical degree.
Then I did a drive by with DH. Ok - I know this sounds a bit odd - but we live in queens and seriously, you can spend half your life trying to find a parking space. As it turns out, my first choice doctor was located less than 2 miles from my apt and had parking across the street - which was like the holy grail for me.
So then I called her and asked if she was taking new patients. Her receptionist said yes and I had a consultation appointment with her today. I had a short list of questions and she gave me a tour of the facility. These doctors are used to consultation visits, so they have info packets for you, they bring up info that you may not have thought of, and (hopefully most) are very obliging.
I am thrilled that I like the doctor and that we have this in place - yes, I made it a bit of a process, but it was worth it.
