People not using Carseat!!
Can someone please help me find a link to graphic details about what happens to a child who is in an accident and is not in a car seat.
My father, stepmother and stepsister will often put my 3 yo twin nieces in the car without a carseat. They will just put a seatbelt on. And even when they are in the carseat the belts are not properly on, loose, etc. I have left my 3yo at their house and they drove her home once and I realzed later that she was not in a carseat. I will not allow her in their car anymomre.
I have told them about the laws and dangers, but they are so thick and ignorant they don't care about statistics or getting a ticket. And they just don't believe they are going to get into an accident. I can't stand to know that the twins are still sometimes riding this way. My last hope is to send them an email with a scary account of what can happen to a child who is not properly restrained in the car.
I did a search but can't really find anything.

Re: People not using Carseat!!
Found this so far:
It's the LAW in New York:
All front seat occupants must buckle up;
All children under 16 years of age, in the front and back seat, must buckle up;
All children under 7 must be buckled into a federally-approved appropriate child restraint system;
Drivers can receive a fine of up to $100 and three points against their license if a passenger under age 16 is not properly restrained.

My stepsister IS the parent, she is seperated and her husband lives in India. Her mom watches the kids a lot while my SS is at work. But, she takes the car with the carseats to work while my SM has the car with no carseats, go figure!

See, that's the problem I can tell them about laws forever, and they don't take them seriously at all. I mean they are really thickheaded. So, I'm looking for scare tactics, like a child being thrown through a windshield and how they can have a permanent spinal cord injury or something like that

IMO that fine should be a lot more than $100! That is not a lot more than a parking ticket but so much worse!

call the police and have them come speak to your family before something terrible happens to the children.

I read the inital post wrong. I thought it was just your Stepmom and dad not the mother of the children!! Someone should have the police come and talk to them, maybe while they are loading the kids up in the car to take them somewhere w/o car seats, before they get on the road. Maybe paying a fine and a stern talking to will knock some sense into them. What about talking to your stepsister? Heck, the booster seats from Graco that they are probably able to sit in are $20. I dont think $20 is asking too much!

Re: People not using Carseat!!
Statistics
Child Passenger Safety: Prevention StrategiesChild safety seats reduce the risk of death in passenger cars by 71% for infants, and by 54% for toddlers ages 1 to 4 years (NHTSA 2005a). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends booster seats for children over 40 pounds until they are at least 8 years of age or 4'9" tall (NHTSA 2005b). For children 4 to 7 years, booster seats reduce injury risk by 59% compared to safety belts alone (Durbin 2003). All children ages 12 years and younger should ride in the back seat. This eliminates the injury risk of deployed front passenger-side airbags and places children in the safest part of the vehicle in the event of a crash. Overall, for children less than 16 years, riding in the back seat is associated with a 40% reduction in the risk of serious injury. Appropriately restrained children ages 13 to15 who sit in the front seat are not at increased risk for injury (Durbin 2005). To learn more about effective interventions to increase child safety seat use, visit CDC's Motor Vehicle Occupant Safety page.

I know this is going to sound absolutely crazy. I wouldn't bother with an email since it sounds like you've already had that conversation. I'd call the precinct by their house and ask them for advice on how to handle it.

Re: People not using Carseat!!
that is very scary! How can you say you'll never be in an accident??!! That's ridiculous!
I am such a cautious driver now that I have my daughter....I cannot imagine not buckling her up!!!
Unfortunately, your family may not get the point until something does happen

Re: People not using Carseat!!
CALL THE POLICE...let her get a huge ticket and that will solve this problem once and for all. I would rather call the police, then have them call me about an accident. This is just very scary. sorry you have to deal with this.
