People who had braces... - Edited w/ pic
I just got back from the dentist with Emma and Jeremy. The dentist said that since Emmas teeth are nice and together with little space between them that she will be needing braces when she gets older. Now if you had braces were your teeth nice when you were little and when you got your permanant teeth they were too crowded. I dont seem to understand how my daughter with perfect teeth now can be predicted to need braces in the future.

Re: People who had braces...
my teeth were always crooked due to over crowding (still are, since my wisdom teeth grew in AFTER the braces came off).
Maybe that is what (s)he sees?

Re: People who had braces...
Maybe because her baby teeth are smaller and the when the permanent ones grow into the same space they will be larger teeth and will therefore be overcrowded?

Re: People who had braces...
She may have what I had. My mouth is too small for my teeth. I had braces from 3rd grade to 6th grade. I have no problems now. Sometimes when I floss some of my teeth are tight together. My orth. tried everything not to pull any of my teeth.

Re: People who had braces...
This is sort fo what happenned to FH and why he has braces now at 24.
When he was little he had big gaps between his teeth, but he was told that when his wisdom teeth came in, they'd push them all together and they'd be fine. His wisdom teeth never came in and are never going to come in and he has gaps like he's 6 years old.
So I mean it's a good thing to keep in mind that she has the potential to have a crowded mouth, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.
They told me my mouth was so small and crowded I'd ahve to get my wisdom teeth pulled. But nope, so far so good.

Re: People who had braces...
I was a hideous mess once I had those 1st one fall out and the ones grow in. Thank gosh for braces!!! Overcrowded, had 2 pulled out..there was not enough room for my big teeth.
I also wore them again at age 21.

You never know. They predicted FH would not need them and he did. They predicted I'd need wisdom teeth pulled and I didn't. You can't really tell.
All I cna sy is if she does need them..get them young. I'm watching FH go through it at 24 and it's very painful and expensive!

I really wouldn't worry about it until you need too. Emma still has her baby teeth and anything can happen.
Our dentist told my mother in no uncertain terms that my sister would need braces - nope she's fine! Straight teeth, no gaps. Never had braces.

Re: People who had braces...
Yes the primarys hold the spaces for the permanants. As a dental hygienist, I have(and the doctors I have worked for) have always told parents that it's too early to predict eruption pattern on a young child. You really have no idea what will happen when the primary teeth erupt unless there is a definite problem like a jaw misalignment or such... I also saw your decalcification post on Parenting. Can this child spit out effectively?? If he/she can then they should be using fluoride on decalcification to prevent future damage. You can FM me for any questions...

Is 4 too young to determine if she will need braces? I will take a pic of her teeth now to show you if you want.
Jeremy is 18 months, I cant see him spitting. The dentist told me to stop his floride vitamins and brush his teeth 2x a day with a dab of prescription Colgate toothpaste.

Yes 18 mos is def too young. In this case I agree with the tx plan. You can def send me a pic. He just noted the spacing not any jaw/bite problems?? I think 4 is so young to predict tooth eruption pattern. Take it with a grain of salt. I've seen teeth come in really funky after perfect primarys.

Re: People who had braces... - Edited w/ pic
Wow, she really does have perfect teeth!
The only thing I see is that her side teeth are a little "crooked" they're kind of angular against the two front teeth...so she may need braces to fix that. Or she may not. I think she's too young to tell.

Re: People who had braces... - Edited w/ pic
As a brace wearer....
I'm pretty sure the fact that there is no space between Emmas' teeth now means there will be eve nless when her adult teeth come in.
She'll probably get spacers first to create some space, then brackets on her molars to push those back so that adult teeth have room to come in. That might be the extent of it. I had NO room for my teeth to come in and my two front top teeth came in angled inward towards each other!
The dentist might be able to foresee this by looking at spacing and jaw size now?
does that help at all?

Um Hampton Pediatric Dentists. Dr. Cosenza in Southampton. Today was her first appointment. Who was the one in Riverhead and what do you think of them?

Re: People who had braces... - Edited w/ pic
I dont know what she forsaw. All She said, with a smile on her face, was that she is going to need braces and its the parents whos childrens teeth are perfect when they are babies are the ones who need braces.
