People who travel for work - questions...
My company's offices are all within driving distance of our main office so whenever we would travel, we were expected to drive our own car, use our own credit cards to pay for everything, and get reimbursed later via expense forms/checks.
I've never traveled for another job (or a very large international company) so I don't know if this is normal. If you travel, or know someone who does, could you help me out with this?:
1. Is travel domestic or international or both? 2. Do they (you) have a company car? 3. Company expense account? 4. Company laptop? 5. Company cellphone/PDA? 6. Do they pay for transportation to/from the airport? 7. If you were going on an interview for a position with 25% travel, would you ask any/all of these questions up front?
Thank you!!

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
I used to travel a few yrs ago for my former job.
1. Is travel domestic or international or both? I never had to travel Internationally - out of the country 2. Do they (you) have a company car? no, I used my own car and got a certain amount per mile reimbursed 3. Company expense account? nope, got reimbursed 4. Company laptop? yes 5. Company cellphone/PDA? no 6. Do they pay for transportation to/from the airport? yes, but if it is cheaper to drive yourself and park, they wanted you to do that instead 7. If you were going on an interview for a position with 25% travel, would you ask any/all of these questions up front? I would not ask these questions on an interview, but that's just me.

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
I don't travel for work, but my coworkers do. Here's how it works:
1. Domestic travel only
2. They all have company cars
3. No one has an expense account. In most cases, the hotel and conference fees are paid in advance by check or our Executive Director's credit card. They are expected to keep receipts from their meals and submit them for reimbursement when they return.
4. They don't have company laptops
5. They do have company cell phones, which our company is billed for, not the emplyee.
6. They usually arrange their own transportation to and from the airport, and keep the receipt to be reimbursed.
7. I don't know if it is appropriate to ask about the travel details- maybe in the second interview? I hope someone else has better advice on that part.

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
My boss travels both domestically and internationally. She has a laptop, blackberry and cell phone all paid by the company. Car service is provided to the airport but it's put on the corporate card and then has to be submitted via expense report. Airline tickets are paid by the company through American Express travel. Hotel, meals, taxis and any other misc. expenses are reimbursed via expense report. If they use their corporate cards for their expenses our company pays the bill directly. There are no company cars.
I would not ask any of these questions. Most companies have policies in place that work with their accounting department. Rest assured that most companies that require you travel will have policies and procedures in place to make sure you don't incur any expenses. You may have to lay out money ahead but you will get reimbursed.
Are you concerned about laying out the money ahead?

1. Is travel domestic or international or both? BOTH. FOR INTERNATION WE USE BUSINESS CLASS...

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
1. Is travel domestic or international or both? depends 2. Do they (you) have a company car? no. 3. Company expense account? corporate credit card 4. Company laptop? yes 5. Company cellphone/PDA? I don't but more senior people do 6. Do they pay for transportation to/from the airport? yes 7. If you were going on an interview for a position with 25% travel, would you ask any/all of these questions up front? No. It's normal practice for companies to pay for or reimburse you for travel related expenses. I used to have to pay my corporate card bill and then request reimbursement, but our new system is cashless and I don't have to lay out any expenses I put on my corporate card.
I'd ask them to define 25% travel. Is that one week/month, 2 days a week, etc. I'd also want to find out the locations to which you'd travel.

I am. I have plenty of credit card limit to go around, but they said travel might be for 2 weeks on/1 week off. That could get really pricey if you're going to Asia and expected to front the money yourself.
Although it is a really big company, and I would expect at least the big stuff to be covered with company accounts. I just never had to be concerned with this before, I don't know what to expect.
I tend to just accept things about new jobs, without trying to negotiate a better deal for myself. I think I put myself at a disadvantage that way, and thought the travel thing might be a good way to negotiate.

1. Is travel domestic or international or both? BOTH
2. Do they (you) have a company car? NO
3. Company expense account? NO
4. Company laptop? WE GET WHEN ON LOAN WHEN WE TRAVEL
5. Company cellphone/PDA? BBERRY AND CELL PHONE
6. Do they pay for transportation to/from the airport? OUR TRAVEL COMPANY WILL PAY FOR AIRFARE WHEN WE CALL THEM TO BOOK FLIGHTS - WE PAY FOR TRANSPORTATION, HOTEL ETC AND THEN GET REIMBURSED
7. If you were going on an interview for a position with 25% travel, would you ask any/all of these questions up front? YES, I WOULD. IF YOU ARE EXPECTED TO TRAVEL, YOU SHOULD FIND OUT HOW THE COMPANY HANDLES IT. ALSO WE GET A SPENDING CAP ON HOW MUCH PER DAY WE HAVE FOR SPENDING MONEY -MEANING WE CAN'T GO OUT FOR 100 DINNERS EVERYNIGHT. OF COURSE IF YOU ARE WITH CLIENTS THEN NO LIMIT - BUT IF YOU ARE BY YOURSELF THERE IS A CAP

I do that too! Good for you for preparign to negotiate.
If its major travel, it should be on a company card. I travel 1-2 times a year & don't have a card. Most other people who travel do have a card.
At my last review, I was asked if I would be able to travel more next year, so I requested a company card & they said it would be fine.
I am able to book my hotels on my boss card, b/c they just need a card for a deposit & then when I get there I give them mien for the balance.
Using my own cards has never really been a problem, except now, b/c I am trying to keep my motnh to month balances low, b/c I am buying a co-op & my credit is being checked by a thousand different people.
Is it a sales postion? Most sales reps & sales managers I know have company cars, laptops, & CCs.
ETA- They may even tell you some of this in the interview, its definiely ok to ask, if things are going well.

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
When I worked for a large bank, I had a corporate card and all expenses associated with the trip were put on the card. Also any cash I spent of my own was also reimbursed. If we were going somewhere that was drving distance, we always rented a car. I did have a laptop, but no phone.
With this company that I work for now, I have to pay for everything except for airfare out of my pocket and get reimbursed later. I hate that.

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
I travel for my job on occasion. Big trips are maybe once or twice a year, but smaller trips are all the time (one town to another - like you said our other offices are all within 45 mins driving distance of each other).
Here are my answers
Posted by greenfreak
1. Is travel domestic or international or both? Domestic only for me.
2. Do they (you) have a company car? No.
3. Company expense account? No.
4. Company laptop? Yes.
5. Company cellphone/PDA? No. Pager ()
6. Do they pay for transportation to/from the airport? Yes.
7. If you were going on an interview for a position with 25% travel, would you ask any/all of these questions up front? Yes.
Thank you!!
My job pays mileage, and breakfast and dinner (not lunch) if it's a long trip. They pay hotel and airfare and whatever method of transportation I chose to use to get to where I need to go. For example, I've flown upstate for work, but I've also taken the train. They pay either way.
But everything works the same way as you said - you spend out of pocket and then they reimburse you later.

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
I travel for work seeing patients at home:
1. I only travel around nassau county.
2. We alll have company cars, but we also use our own private car and we are reinbursed per mile at the end of every month by a check.
3. No one has an expense account. If we need to travel for a training in the city, we jsut get reinbursed with our gas reinbursement.
4. We don't have company laptops
5. We are all given a blackberry which is billed to me company.

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
I travel a lot for work (most of my colleagues actually relocate for several months at a stretch....but I won't do that - would rather commute unreasonable distances).
1. Is travel domestic or international or both? For me, both. 2. Do they (you) have a company car? Yes 3. Company expense account? No - get reimbursed. 4. Company laptop? Yes 5. Company cellphone/PDA? Yes 6. Do they pay for transportation to/from the airport? Yes 7. If you were going on an interview for a position with 25% travel, would you ask any/all of these questions up front? Maybe not on the first interview - but once a salary offer is extended, I'd ask these questions immediately.

I have a company Amex that all my expenses get charged to and I get reimbursed.
I would only ask these questions in an interview if it was the 2nd or 3rd round, not on the first.
I would also ask how long it takes to get reimbursed. Sometimes my company is very slow and I have to lay out a few grand util I get my expense check.

Thanks again everyone. I'm beginning to see that it all depends on the company and the way they want to handle it. Your answers all vary!

Why wouldn't they pay for lunch too? That's weird. What, you're only supposed to eat 2 meals a day when you travel?

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
1. Is travel domestic or international or both?
So far only domestic but maybe international. We have offices all over the world.
2. Do they (you) have a company car?
Yes, I ordered it and will get an E-Z pass for the car. Right now I am using my car and being reimbursed for mileage at .445 cents per mile plus tolls.
3. Company expense account?
No but I have a company Amex card. I submitted my first out of pocket expense report (prior to getting the Amex) on 10/5/06 and am expecting my reimbursement any day now.
4. Company laptop?
Yes plus all-in-one printer/fax/scanner for home and they paid for my home office furniture.
5. Company cellphone/PDA?
yes/yes - a blackberry
6. Do they pay for transportation to/from the airport?
Yes- last time was a limo They reimburse for rental cars while OOT and cab fare plus meals.
7. If you were going on an interview for a position with 25% travel, would you ask any/all of these questions up front?
No. Since you already know there is a lot of travel involved I'd wait to ask these questions until you have an offer since you will need the answers to determine a starting salary for negotiating.
Hope this helps.

Re: People who travel for work - questions...
Thank you!
I actually had the interview last week and didn't ask these questions. I figured out that the airfare/hotels are paid by the employee and reimbursed later. Can we say frequent flyer miles??
I was planning on asking in a second interview but was told they will not do a 2nd interview. They're making their decision this week. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed. Which makes it hard to type. But I REALLY want this job now!
