People without basements
where do you store stuff? We don't have a basement, but we have a room over our garage that we use for storage. If we decide to stay in this house for a while, we're going to convert that space into a master suite, but I'm concerned about storing things that I need access to easily, like toilet paper, diapers, etc. I don't want to be climbing up into the attic multiple times a week.

Re: People without basements
My FIL has no basement (levittown house) and has extended the closet space in the bedrooms for more storage and also has a large shed in the backyard that he built to hold a lot of stuff.

The house that we're getting doesn't have a basement but it has a HUGE 2 1/2 car garage with plenty of storage space.

Re: People without basements
I HATE that we don't have a basement...but, we do have an attic and a 2 car garage...so, we do have some storage space.
I just wish we'd have a basement so our garage could be a bit neater.

Re: People without basements
My mother's house in Patchogue is actually a Levitt house too- no basement and no attic. She uses her garage for most things- but I do have to say that the closets in her house are HUGE!

Re: People without basements
I have a hi-ranch with no actual basement and no attic that is useable. We have storage under the steps that go from the first level to the second and we have a 2.5 car garage we store stuff in too. Most of DH's outside tools are stored in the shed we have in the back yard.

Re: People without basements
We have a lot of stuff in the garage. Our house is a split level, and we have a crawlspace-type area on the third level that holds a lot.
We also have a ridiculous amount of crap in the two extra bedrooms (it's just DH and I at the moment). We really have to detach ourselves from a lot of our stuff.

Re: People without basements
I have a 2 car garage. 1 garage is converted to a room - we use as a gym and playroom - so we can't use that for storage. The other garage is cut in half - kind of. Like 2/3 is a garage that can't fit a car and the other half is used as a large storage closet. We can't fit a car in the garage but that doesn't bother us - I have a circular driveway -so plenty of parking.
We use the garage for furniture and garage type stuff - tools, snowblower, our coffee table which we don't use with the baby, etc. We have crawl space is where all old baby gear and holiday decorations are stored. Later if we put done wood -we can probably use the space better. The storage closet is a tons of stuff. We have tons of sleves and there storage shelving units. We also have a pantry off our kitchen. It's a pantry/laundry room - so that's where food, costco stuff - toilet paper, paper towels, bottled water all goes. We have an attic but to tell you the truth I have no clue what it looks like. I know it isn't big and we'd have to put floor boards down - but when we run out of space - we'll figure that out. We also cut down trees in our yard and got a huge shed - well huge for our size yard. We store ur patio furniture in there in the winter and all yard stuff - baby pool, gardening stuff, etc. in there. All the rooms have nice size closets as well - so diapers and baby stuff is all in the nursery closet.

Re: People without basements
We have a Levitt cape and the previous owner combined the three downstairs closets into one large walk-in pantry. That's where we keep extra canned and dried foods as well as our paper towels, toliet paper, etc.

Re: People without basements
I grew up in house w/o a basement & the townhouse I lived in for years didn't have one. I had storage shelves added to the laundry room & the coat closet which was large. I also had pull down stairs for the attic put in & I used it all the time. It wasn't that inconvenient because we put a floor up there & in most spots I could stand. I also had a one car garage that we eventually converted to living space. After that the patio furniture & stuff had to stay outside. I loved that townhouse, but after my DH & stepdaughter moved in we needed more space.

Re: People without basements
We have a lot in the garage and in the attic.
We bought these for the garage and they are perfect.
We have 3 of them in the garage. One of them is just for my extra gadgets (pizza stone, crock pot, rice cooker, etc...), another one is small gardening tools and misc stuff outside stuff and the third is where we keep the big bulky things we get from BJ's (toilet paper, paper towels, bread crumbs, canned stuff, cleaners, detergent) and other misc inside stuff.
The attic has the holiday and/or seasonal items.

ETA: DH also built a corner shelf in the garage for us to store all the chemical products (red ant killer, and fertilizers)

Even with 4 bedrooms and a 2 1/2 car garage storage is still an issue. Most of the stuff is in cabinets in the garage. We throw out alot! DH is actually out there today organizing it AGAIN!
