Yes, you can paint it with an exterior paint.

I thought the same thing
You can powerwash vinyl siding to get it clean and fresh.

and I pretty much hate it. I grew up in a brownstone...and my current building is all stone.
I like stone.
but there's not much in the way of stone out there. 
siding can get very yucky looking it seems. I am trying to find ways to avoid that/grow to like it.

You could change it to stucco. That's what we plan to do.
