Personal Stylists
I've been watching a lot of "What Not to Wear" lately. Some people like the show and some do not. I happen to enjoy watching Stacey and Clinton have people find their true potential fashion wise and build the confidence.
I would love the opportunity to have a stylist to purge me of my wardrobe and "re-do" me. However, I sure as hell do not want my business on television. The show is obviously staged to some extent, but I do have a degree of pride KWIM?
Do stylists exist for the common person who doesn't have a boatload of money to spend? I suppose I'd like to have someone help me figure out what is flattering and what is not. Im not just talking about a "friend" who has and knows fashion.

I thought about that but I wonder how much of their stuff they will push on you. I was thinking of someone who works for themselves who takes you shopping - maybe like a "by the hour" type of thing.
Geez I sound pretentious. So not me.

you don't sound pretentious - you sound sensible, and you want to present yourself in the best way possible!
i don't know of anyone here on long island that does it (i am sure they are abundant in NYC and LA) but i'd be willing to bet that if you checked online you could find someone.
i wonder if someone on here with some experience in the fashion industry would be willing to do something like that?

Or could just have a Fashion and Beauty GTG and we can all help each other shop!
I'm only partially joking about that

I would say to go with the personal shopper at a place like Macys. I tried to hire a home decorator who I thought was independent. I paid her a flat fee but then found out that she was getting a kickback wherever she brought me. My dad was in the rug business and he warned me. As you have seen from my home, I never did get it professionally decorated. I still have the plans and fabric swatches but next time I would go a place like Ethan Allen and just have it known to me that the person will take a commission.
I think we need a place like Denny's for our grownup layettes .

Re: Personal Stylists
I actually have a friend who is interested in starting a business doing this- going to women's homes and helping them purge (or keep) their closet. She mixes outfits and such. She has a great eye. If you are interested, FM me and I'll forward it on to her.

Re: Personal Stylists
A friend of mine does this. She started out as a personal shopper for Vivre clients, but eventually left the company and I'm pretty sure she's on her own now. Unfortunately she's in NYC. I'm not sure if she takes on clients from LI. I'll see if I can get some info.

Re: Personal Stylists
My sister went to Macy's in Smithhaven mall, they have the macy's by appointment service there. On the phone she told the woman what she was looking for (work clothes) answered some questions and gave her sizes. When we go to Macy's, there was a whole rack of clothese waiting for my sister to try on. If she liked it or wanted a different color, someone went and got it for her. There was no pressure to buy anything...it was a really good experience. She wound up with a few things that she probably wouldn't have chosen for herself.
ETA...the service is FREE, I assume the personal shopper gets a commission based on how much the customer spends.
