Re: Petco / Petsmart Training
I did it at Petsmart when my dog was a puppy (She is 2-years now). IMO It was beneficial, she learned sit, stay, lay, come, etc.. the basic stuff. I think the biggest benefit for me also was she is not around a lot of other dogs, so it was a way to teach her how to interact with other dogs as well. It was also a great bonding experience.
I did not do the intermediate class after that, just the beginner.

Re: Petco / Petsmart Training
We did a class with them, it was just basic commands with a group of people and their pets. It was more fun than anything.

Does your dog still obey the commands? Thanks

My dog mostly does but it's us who has to be consistent, otherwise he "forgets". But if you need real training, I would not suggest Petco.

I would rather have "real" training but i cant find a place that doesnt use a collar for corrections. We have a small breed dog and were told specifically by our vet and the shelter we got him - to not use a collar. Its so frustrating

I cant believe they want you to use a collar...you cant find anywhere that wont use a collar? Are you in Nassu or suffok> I used a lady who comes to your house, excellent lady...who would not use a collar!!!

Yup - that seems to be everyones training method!!
I live in Suffolk. How much is the lady that comes to your house? I havent looked into those as much since they're usually pricey!
Thanks

Re: Petco / Petsmart Training
you can use a "shock" collar on a small dog, i wouldn't recommend a choke collar. what kind of behavior issues are you having? petco/petsmart is crap training but you learn the basic commands

no, you cannot use a shock collar on a small dog, or any dog for that matter. you are basically giving your dog electric shocks in the neck!!!!
i totally agree, no choke collar or prong collar either.
ETA: sorry, i don't mean to sound so btchy about it. i just find shock collars really cruel. everyone has the right to their own opinion, i just think they are abusive but i know some people and trainers would disagree with me.

i think this is quite offensive. i'm probably one of the biggest anti animal abuse people out there and in no way am i "abusing" my dog cause she is collar trained. you obviously don't know what youre talking about cause they DON'T hurt. the trainers at best friends training made us put the collar on our arms and hands and they "shocked" you to see that it doesn't hurt. the collar has a range from 10-100. we always put Jameson's collar on either 10 or 20 and we've only used it higher than that when she's tried to jump the fence. It's "annoying" more than anything. it's like someone constantly tapping you. not SHOCK.
there are plenty of small and large dogs that use this type of training and it's perfectly humane. even a LIF'er on here brings her 2 small dogs and they're doing great.

Re: Petco / Petsmart Training
Some close friends of ours did the training at Petsmart & they liked it a lot. It's basic command training and socialization though, not really "behavior" training, so for your average dog it's probably good, but if you have more serious issues, I'd look elsewhere.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset and offend you. Like I said, I have a different opinion on the matter and I know others would disagree with me. There are two very distinct camps on this topic and I shouldn't have said anything knowing how inflammatory it could be.
ETA: I don't think it's a 1:1 comparison to test it on your hand and wrist. The collar is not used on a dog's paw or wrist. Like I said, we will just be in disagreement on this topic. Again, I'm sorry for upsetting you.
