Re: Petfinder.com
I think most of the pets on petfinder are from rescue groups. It's kind of just a way for each group to get more exposure to actually get more animals adopted.
I don't think there are a lot of individuals (potential wackos) that sign up for the site to advertise 1 animal.
I found one of my dogs through petfinder. She was posted by a rescue group and they were very nice to deal with.

Re: Petfinder.com
best place IMO! you will come across a few wacko's but its much better then criagslist because you really never know.
IMO the best thing to do is use the site to search shelters in the area that have what you are looking for. that way you rescue a pet.
I highly recommend looking at the Hempstead town shelter, although its far, they have a TON of dogs and they are a kill shelter so you are really rescuing a dog!! good luck! I can't wait to see what you get

Re: Petfinder.com
We adopted our kitten from Amazing Animals Rescue who is on petfinder.com. Our happytail is actually also posted on petfinder :) I think if you research the group you would adopt from everything will be fine. Im not sure what kind of wackos would be on a site like that though?

DH emailed someone about a dog he saw on there, and the response was odd, plus they refused to even talk about the dog that DH was asking about, they kept offering us a different dog altogether.
I will keep looking, thanks

Re: Petfinder.com
I found my dog on Petfinder and she is so great we couldn't be happier. She was listed by a rescue organization as well. We had to jump through hoops to be deemed worthy of her but it was totally worth it!

thats not the norm! anyone can really post pets on there but I would suggest sticking with groups or shelters. be prepared they will probably want to do a home inspection and interview before they turn over the pet. and most if not always, there is an adoption fee

Re: Petfinder.com
That's how we found the rescue that we adopted Ginger from. I expanded the search to Connecticut so I could find more breed-specific rescues. The CT ones might adopt out of state like ours did (Labs4Rescue).
I kept in mind that no matter what the people are like, the dogs should be my focus. I dealt with some difficult personalities here and there, but it didn't deter me from the search.
I know rescue people & fosters in particular know these dogs better than anyone and could be a valuable resource on if it will fit well into your family. So they might steer you in a different direction if they know a dog isn't great with kids, for example.
Good luck with your search, and I hope you find a great dog!
