Petit Mal Seizures in children... anyone have any experience (poss MMR related)
We gave my 21 month old DS the MMR shot on 11/17. On 11/30, he began having Petit Mal Seizures. Approximately 30-40 per day. My physician is saying he doubts it's related but I am not so sure.
Yesterday we went for an EEG, and because he didn't do any during the test, the results don't show any abnormality. So the Peds Neurologist won't see us until MARCH. MARCH. I live upstate, there aren't many practices and there aren't any other options...
Has anyone heard of this reaction to the MMR before / have any experience with Petit Mal Seizures? From discussions with my Ped and what I've read, a lot of kids outgrow them and they are treatable with Meds.
The thought of DS needing Meds daily for this makes me ...
Any prayers you could spare would be much appreciated.

I don't have any personal experience, but I can tell you that two of my cousins (brother and sister) have epilepsy - the boy has grand mal seizures and the girl has petit mal seizures. She has several per day, even on meds. It hasn't affected her at all as far as I know - she did awesome in school and has a good social life. I wish I had more info, lots of luck to you and your little boy

Thank you so much for that. Yes, DS's development is great. He is speaking in phrases/short sentences, using 4 syllable words, and has already peed and #2'd on the potty.

My brother is an epileptic. But his are grand mal seizures. He didn't start having them until well into his 20's . He has been medicated since. They can be very scary. Most young kids do outgrow them. Honestly, I don't think it is a reaction from the shot. I'm not dr, but that's jmo.and, NONE of my brothers eegs EVER showed anything wrong. He has even had a seizure while having the test, and it NEVER showed up.

Well, this makes me feel a little better too. The test wasn't fun (DS couldn't nap allll day and they had to attach like 50 electrodes to his head and body and he had to fall asleep in the Dr's office)...
Does the meds your brother is on prevent the seizures?
And did they change his personality at all? That is what I am worried about... I don't want my smart, spunky DS affected by the meds.

The meds he is on NOW do. He was on Dilantin for years. Never worked. All it did was literally rott his teeth out of his mouth. He is 32 and getting a bridge for his mouth. His personality is still warped he does hVe some memory issues. Like long time ago things. He will sometimes call me and ask me xyz. We kind of make light of it. We have to. It bothers him everyday. He hates having this disorder. It halts his life in minor aspects. His recent seizure was driving home from work on a normally pretty busy 4 lane road. He went across all 4 lanes. Walked Away with a bump on his head. He has been very lucky. I worry about him all the time. He is currently on something with a t, like triptaline or something. This has proved to be the best.
I should state, my brother nevere showed any signs of seizures. He believes it is from doing mushrooms. I bought him beastie boy tix for a birthday one year. He did shrooms at that concert. He got this super "heavy" feeling that night. He actually sat down in the middle of MSG and blacked out. He had his first seizure 6 months later. He said he gets the same feeling he had that night before each seizure. Connection, maybe, maybe not.

Re: Petit Mal Seizures in children... anyone have any experience (poss MMR related)
DH has epilepsy, which triggered after a very bad bicycle crash where he slammed his head (he is the biggest advocate for helmets now, since he didn't have one on when he fell). He would have Petit Mal seizures until they found the right meds for him. It hit in the early teenage years, and did not affect him socially in the slightest. He was still very involved in sports (once he got the clearance) and band. He still takes Dilantin daily, and once a year goes for an ambulatory EEG, where they hook him up to all the sensors for 24 hours. Actually,at 33 years old, he still goes to his pediatric neurologist because he is so comfortable with them (they always call me if they need to get in touch with him for any reason...not used to the patient being old enough to make his own decisions ) He is 100% controlled by his meds, and it has not affected his personality at all (I got this info from his sister).
I just want to give you lots of as I am sure you are very nervous trying to get everything figured out. Good luck with everything!!!

Re: Petit Mal Seizures in children... anyone have any experience (poss MMR related)
My 5 year old has a petit mal seizure disorder. He had a documentable vaccine injury at 8 weeks old. I do believe that there is a correlation. Feel free to FM for more info. In the scheme of things, his seizure disorder is low priority and manageable.
NOT starting a vaccine debate AT ALL, would just recommend to you and any other mom that feels there may have been an abnormal reaction to a vaccine that you have a blood test titer done before any vaccination booster is given. Cole had WAY more immunity than he needed after only one MMR, he doesn't require a second. Not all immune systems are equal.
