Most shelters in general do not. None of the ones in the city do either. We do live in an evacuation zone so we would probably go to my mothers house if we needed to leave. I couldn't leave my dog behind either Chat Icon

ETA: This is why it is very important if you have pets you plan in advance and figure out what you will do with them in case of an emergency. And not just hurricanes, but for all emergencies where you might have to stay in a shelter (fire, flooding, etc). Always a good idea to be prepared.

Re: Pets & Hurricane

I just got a dog and was thinking the same thing. I would never leave the dog behind unless it meant my life vs his.

Re: Pets & Hurricane

I would not worry about it for this storm unless you live when it floods easily.

I don't foresee us having to evacuate if there's evacuations at all (we're well north of Sunrise Highway and Merrick). However, if we did, we'd have to find a pet friendly hotel, or we'd have to just keep driving with our cats in the car if we couldn't find one. Leaving our cats behind is not at all an option for us.

Re: Pets & Hurricane

i am preparing a spare room for my stray kittens/cats that has a separate entrance. Yea i am completely nutty but since they come to my house when its just slightly bad I can only imagine what they would do in a hurricane. Perhaps I finally can get them into carriers and get them to a shelter.

Just preparing. We got evacuated for Hurricane Gloria here when I was younger. And that was a category 1. There was alot of damage to our neighborhood.

I like to have a plan just in case. Again this could be nothing but I need a plan in my head and I just pray I wont have to use it.

I just cannot leave my dog and cat behind.

I lived in FL for 4 yrs. and we had a mandatory evac one year and NO evac shelters take animals. We ended up booking a hotel that allowed pets because there was no way we'd leave our dog behind.
