Pets around children - please be careful

Although there have been posts on this topic in the past last nights news reported another story of a family pet killing an 8mth old.

Everyone interviewed praised the dog as the most loving and protective animal everChat Icon story

I was so sad when I heard this. Although I love my dogs, and they are small & well trained I NEVER leave them with my baby. Animals are animals...who knows what their insticts might be?

I just finished reading this story in Newsday about 5 minutes ago. Crazy! They say that the dog was never vicious. It just goes to show you that you can never be too cautious when it comes to animals.

ITA. I love my dogs but they are NEVER alone with DS. The PNP is my savior to have DS with us in the LR.

So sad. My dog is great with kids, but I always watch him carefully. When DS was just starting to walk he went through a phase where he would pull himself up on the dog. Doggy started giving subtle signals that this annoyed him and I would always separate them at that point.

MIL watches DS once a week and I was afraid that she would miss my dog's subtle signals, so I just had her keep the dog in my room for the day while we were away. Although I felt a little bad for my doggy I knew it was better than chancing anything.

That poor family.

Re: Pets around children - please be careful

I used to be a mail carrier and one of the tips they gave us while we are out delivering mail was that if you see children playing in a front yard and there is a dog in the yard as well (loose or tied up), do not approach the house. Even the gentlest dogs can get territorial and can bite or attack. We were told to try to come back and deliver the mail later or put a note on the mail and deliver it the next day. You just never know.

Re: Pets around children - please be careful

This is so sad and so incredibly scarey. I have a very large dog (105lbs) and although he is the friendliest mush you could meet, I am still so careful, but I bet I could never be careful enough ya know. Scares me. I just do not leave them alone unsupervised while baby is within Barney's reach, and baby is not allowed squeeky toys, Barney associates the squeek as his, and I don't want there to be a problem.

Still you never know what could set an animal off. Ihad a dog growing up, that was AWSOME with my six brothers and I, but one day a visitor was over and jumped on her while she was alseep, and she bit her. We never had another problem after that, but these silly things can just happen.

Unfortunetely, this isin't silly at all, my heart truely goes out to this family who has now lost so much, I can't imagine their grief.Chat Icon

Re: Pets around children - please be careful

These stories are so awful. I feel horrible for these poor families.

I have to say - we were always nervous with Molly around Jack - even though she was only 12lbs she def. could get crazy at times.

This new dog loves him to pieces and is 1/3 the size of him -- he could squash her with his pinkie.

Re: Pets around children - please be careful

I have three dogs who are the biggest babies you have ever seen. However, I never, ever leave them out when my grandchildren are in my home. They are safely in another room. If I need to let them out to go the bathroom, I am standing right there between them and my grandchildren. As much as I love them, I don't trust them. Dogs act on instinct and any slight move, sound or scent can change their mood in an instant. I don't care how carefully you may watch an animal, you will never be as quick as they are. I've said this before and I'll say it again, animals and very young children need to be constantly supervised and separated, especially, if the animal can cause serious harm. I'm not saying that an animal should be locked up at all times around a child. The child needs to learn to interact and respect the animal. However, when the child is very young to leave them alone with any animal, no matter how great that animal may be, is irresponsible. It boggles my mind that people just don't understand this.

This is a fear of mine. My dog seems to like Sydney, but if she goes near him (well if we put her near him) he freaks out.

So sad. That poor family. I do admit that I do and will continue to leave Andrew alone with our BT. I never think twice about it.

This happened to my friend a few months ago...the dog grabbed her DD's head and thrashed...and everyone thought that dog was loving and gentle as well.

It's sad but in the end animals are animals, they are NOT people...as much as people claim their dog wouldn't harm anything, you just never ever know. Why take the chance of leaving the two alone? Not worth it to me.

Re: Pets around children - please be careful

When I have small children over, my dogs are put in my bedroom. When I have my own children-they will be watched like hawks and never left alone with my chidren.
