Pets traveling in car

I have a German Shephard, so consider that.
She's only 11weeks, & 17lbs, so how do I transport her both now & when she gets bigger?

She doesn't seem to love cars & we put her in the back of our SUV with a towel, but she wouldn't even sit. But we want to start taking her out more, now that she had her second set of shots & the vet gave the ok.

I have 2 car seats, so that row is not really an option.

So what do you recommend?

Pets traveling in car

We have a Siberian Husky puppy and we use a portable crate for her when she travels with us. She hops right in but it took a bit of time and lots of short trips to get her used to riding in the car.

Re: Pets traveling in car

She'll get used to it and sit eventually. It took my guys a while to get used to it.. one will sit and eventually lay down. The other doesn't like to sit much in the house, so the car isn't any different! Chat Icon

My two are in the back of our truck... we do have them harnessed in for safety (a chain is attached to the car and then to their harnesses)...so they don't jump over the seat and also, god forbid in an accident we don't have 100 lb projectiles flying at our heads!

We use a pet seatbelt / harness for short and longer trips. Our dog (choc lab) sits in the backseat on a pet seat cover.

When she was little we used a small crate but she quickly outgrew it.

I have a boxer pit and he's 70lbs. When it just him and I in my truck, he sits in the front and I seatbelt him in. When we all go, he sits in the back with ds.

That's exactly it! I want us & her safe.

Can a harness attach to the latch hook to an SUV Cargo area?

Re: Pets traveling in car

Yes, we attach the chain (actually a large heavy duty dog collar) to the hook in the cargo area of the car with a heavy duty carabiner that we bought in Home Depot, and then to the harness as well. Works perfectly!

Re: Pets traveling in car

That's what I sorta thought to do! I was in Petsmart looking at harnesses & thought someone it has to attach to the latch.

We have a 40 lb Siberian Husky. We got a shortish leash (it's about a foot an a half adjustable, made for use in the car) which we clip to one of the car seat anchors in the back seat. Then we clip her harness into that. We've done the same in the trunk part of our SUV when we have people in the backseat.

She will get it eventually that she needs to sit.

Re: Pets traveling in car

Today we had her at my daughters feet, just to go into town (5miles) I know not the safest, but at least she sat & she even I think fell asleep. So I think a harness clipped to the back latch will work perfect. Now to figure on which size, since she's growing by the second! She's already 17lbs at 11weeks.

I don't have any specific advice, but just make sure to keep her away from the airbags. If one deploys, that could be a serious problem for a dog!
