Petsmart Motel in Commack?

My pet sitter was away last weekend, and we went away. I decided to use Petsmart motel in commack.

Maple's pet sitter is wonderful - since he is little, she keeps him in her house, and gives him a lot of attention. I was sad she wasn't around, but I thought maybe Petsmart would give him some attention.

I chose one day of daycamp, but I feel other than that, he was completely ignored all weekend. When I picked him up, he just received a bath (I decided to have him groomed as well - it's been 5 months! Chat Icon )

When I got him, he just wanted to get the hell out of there. I never saw him like that. On the way home, he curled up on my lap and didn't move (except to lick at his back nail, which was bleeding - I called immediately to find out they cut his quick and put the stiptik on. They didn't tell me though until I called to inquire about the bleeding. They cut his nails in the morning, and it was after 6 when I picked him up).

When he came home, he RAN to the house. Usually he likes to walk, sniff around, and play. But not last night. He stayed curled up on the couch all night. We bought him a new toy that he played with a little, but he acted odd. Didn't follow me, didn't sit on my lap and lick me, didn't chase the cat. Even DH asked me what was wrong with him this morning - he was still acting off.

It almost seemed like he was drugged - I can't explain it.

Is this depression, or do they do something to the dogs there? It was really upsetting. He was a different dog for about 12 hours. By this afternoon, he was completely back to normal.

What happened to him???

Re: Petsmart Motel in Commack?

He could have been very upset. My dogs act like that when they come home from the groomers, which they hate going to. It takes them until next day to adjust (and I know they are not being drugged).

Poor baby. I think your dog just didn't like it there, and was probably very overwhelmed. Sounds like using a person in a house better suits your dog.

Hope he is back to normal soon. And yes, the nail thing would have upset me too.

Re: Petsmart Motel in Commack?

I had a horrible experience with petsmart, same location, when we boarded char there... We didn't know any better at the time and it was awful!! I paid extra for group play and we got home early from vaca, so when we got there she was supposed to be in group play and wasn't... By her smell and behavior along with the trembles that lasted two days I think she was just left in her pen... Which I also paid extra to have her in the largest area. Her bed we gave them to keep with her had to be thrown out bc they clearly didn't take her to the bah room enough and she peed in it, very unlike her to do. They are horrible!!!!!!

Thank God, I discovered Dr. Gurtman of Townline Vet group in hauppauge - they have the best boarding there. Now Char doesn't get upset when we go away but that experience traumatized her for a long time.

He definitely was better about 12 hrs later, but when I called to check on him, it seemed clear he just stayed in a room all day with no attention. He is a very social dog and spends the entire evening curled up with me. His sitter gives him tons of attention. When he came home after he spent 10 days with her, he was so happy. This petsmart thing really rubbed me the wrong way. Thank you for sharing this. At least I know I am not crazy thinking something went wrong.

Something I did notice was in the playroom both times I came (to drop him off and pick him up), its all windows. I am practically pressed up against the glass dying to play with the dogs, and the staff stand there looking bored and ignoring them. I know they do this day in and day out, but its not like someone is forcing them to work there. It's like working with kids... If you are going to be miserable, go somewhere else. It's not the dogs' faults you hate your job....
