Photography moms - advice please!
DH got me a Canon Rebel 2 years ago for Christmas and I absolutely love it, but honestly, never learned how to use it. I take all my pics on authomatic.
This year, he got me 55-250mm lens & speedlite flash for Christmas.
Now what? I have no clue on where to start on learning how to use the camera and my new accessories.
I tried reading the manuals, and I also have one of Field Guide books someone here suggested, but honestly, my eyes glazed over reading it.
Is there a simpler, dummy way of learning that is not so technical?
I would hate to see such an expensive present go to waste!
Thanks!!

I took a class through my school district's community education class and then bought a field guide... written by David Busch. I am slowly learning a lot... and it feels so good not to have to rely on that little green square anymore! Good Luck!
oh... and I got a flash for Christmas, too. I can't wait to play!

Re: Photography moms - advice please!
I took a class at Nassau Community College. Best thing I did. I struggled for 2 years with my camera. Then during the class I realized I had no idea about anything other than "auto". I found it MUCH EASIER to do a class. I felt the same instructions in a manual was not even close for me to understand what I was trying to do in the end product. In a class, we went for assignements and how to do the assignments. It forced me too to learn about my camera and where everything/menu/functions were.

I find the best tutorial is just getting out there and practicing... I also took several one on one "classes" from a photographer friend, and just read a ton. A great book to start with is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. And the Scott Kelby book series.
When you upload the pics to your computer, take a look at the settings you shot at... and then think what changes might have made the picture that much better.

That book is great although I had a hard time getting through it - I am more of a hands on person.
Classes are always a great idea - school districts, local colleges and even the library offers classes. Berger Brothers has a ton of classes as well.

Re: Photography moms - advice please!
Holly, most of the classes start at night. The one through the district started at 7pm.
Other option - one on one lesson which can run into a bit of money but this way you can do it on your time and get exactly what you need out of it.

I see this post is a little old, but I wanted to add that I am now enrolled in a digital photography class at my local community college and am learning so much. I love it! It was only 125 bucks too. Best money I've ever spent!

Re: Photography moms - advice please!
I think you need to consider how you learn best. Some people read instructions & play around with their camera on their own; others learn better from sitting in a classroom; others are more visual & need to be taught individually rather than one on one.
For me, reading, playing around on my own & then going one-on-one with someone else works best. I've taken classes through my district & a free class from my library.
I second Understanding Exposure by Peterson. I've just started to delve into it. Scott Kelby's photoshop books are great but prettying up a badly exposed or pooly composed photo still makes it a bad photo.
Try taking a look at youtube videos. I subscribe to a bunch of podcasts on iTunes which were helpful too.
