Piano lessons for a 4 yr old - any recommendations?
DS wants to play piano. He has been telling me for just about a year, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Can anyone share their teacher/coach, and reasonable pricing (I haven't taken a private lesson since 1990)
TIA!

where are you located? Plainedge, but I'd be willing to travel a bit for a great teacher/school.

my dd does guitar at Monster music on Hempstead tpk almost right across the street from tri-county. I believe I pay like $240 for 12 lessons. They also have an introductory package that i did first but don't remember the details, it was like a 6 lesson package.

I want my DD to start something too. My BIL is a piano and guitar teacher and said that kids shouldn't really start formal lessons until elementary school age. I thought he could arrange some lessons for the basics/playing with sound and stuff. I'd love to hear more responses!

Julianne; I was asking the music teacher in our school the same thing & she agreed with your BIL. I wanted my 4 year old to start piano & she said they don't have the attention span/long enough fingers/ability at this age to "really" get it. She suggested waiting until 6.

She suggested waiting until 6. generally speaking, perhaps, but i personally think it's child/situation dependent. i apparently started piano at 4, DD#1 is 5 and i have enrolled her for group lessons at a local music school (i'm in jersey) in the fall. i don't feel she is ready for 1-1 instruction, and figured this would be a good way to introduce her and see if she is interested without her 1. getting overwhelmed and frustrated, and 2. without breaking the bank.

The Rock Underground in Bellmore has music lessons for kids starting at a young age. They start off the kids with drums, since it's the easiest for them to follow then move them to other instruments as they see fit. They have group lessons and individual lessons. DH & I went to look around and it looks like a really fun place to learn - not stuffy at all.

crashing...
i teach string instruments privately, but i worked at catalanos for a long time..honestly i've had 3 year olds who were fantastic on strings-it depends on the child
my marker was always if a child could read regularly, then music usually comes pretty quickly
catalano's in nhp is 75/month for a half hour lesson once a week

Re: Piano lessons for a 4 yr old - any recommendations?
Hi :)
I am a music teacher and also teach piano. IMO, I would not start structured lessons until 6-7. If your child is interested in the piano I would let them explore it on their own.
I also think if you do decide on the lessons now, 10 -15 minutes would be most! Even some of my older children dont have the 30 minute attention span.

I was told not to start until age 6 by two different teachers.

DS can read. He has also been *tinkering* on the piano for a while. Recently, he has been listening to songs and trying to mimic the sounds (usually the melody line). Thanks for the recommendations!
