Picking a pediatrician
How do you guys go about doing this? did you go based on location? recommendations?
did you interview yours?
My OB told me that i will need a name of one for when i deliver, which makes sense, but it doesn't necessarily have to be the ped I am using long term for DC. for the ped coming to the hospital, it just has to be someone affiliated with that hospital.
for my long term pediatrician it doesn't have to be associated with the hospital i deliver in.
do i have to tell said pediatrician they are my child's doctor? or just call and schedule a new appointment after baby comes?
just kind of confused about this

I went off a recommendation and never interviewed them. I feel interviews are a waste as you will not really know if you like a dr until you start using them.
I also never called my Ped until after I had my DS. We used the Ped on staff at the hospital and it was fine. Your ped does not need to have privileges you can use the one on staff and then see yours when you leave.

This. I wouldn't even know what to ask them in an "interview" and would feel like an ass.
You aren't married to them. If they don't work out for you, you can switch at any time.
Mine had privileges at the hospital I delivered at, but didn't see DD until the next day. The staff peds took care of her until then.
After you deliver- or before when you are in triage- they will ask for the name of the ped. Once baby is born they will notify his office (if he has privileges at your hospital) and he will come see the baby either that day or the next.
You don't need to notify or call them prior.

My friends mother is a pediatrician so she will be the ped for our boys. We are about 45 min from her so in the hospital they will see the hospital ped then go see her

I am glad no one has interviewed. like you all said ... I would feel like an ass bc i would have no idea what to ask, and also you don't really know if you will like them anyway until you start seeing them.

we also went by recommendations.
if you have a specific plan like antivaxx or have questions about that, you can always ask in advance... but i dont really see a need for an interview either.

I used to work in a ped office when I was in college. These couples would come in to "interview" and sometimes would take up 2 hours of the ped's (and our) time. Beyond her opinions on vaccines and bf-ing I still have no idea what those parents got out of the convo- she wasn't interacting with the baby, they weren't in the waiting room to see how the office operated and they sure as hell didn't know they'd potentially be waiting over an hour for their kid to be seen. If there are potential issues with the baby then I think it makes sense. But if you're looking for a run of the mill ped, there is no reason to interview.

I met with our pediatrician beforehand. I wouldn't call it a formal interview but wanted to check the office out and meet the doctor.
I had a few questions nothing crazy:
-office hours, weekend appointments and availability
-emergency procedures, who is on call?
- vaccine schedule and flexibility
- breastfeeding support
- is there a separate sick and well waiting room?
- checked out the parking situation
- and wanted to get a feel for the office staff, nurses, etc.
We were probably there for 20 minutes. We liked the office so did not look further..

If you don't have a pedestrian beforehand or one affilated with the hospital your child will be seen by the pediatrician on call with that hospital.
Once released you should make an appointment with your pediatrician. My pediatrician wants me to bring DS in on our second day home. The hospital will give you a copy of the baby's records or may ask you for your peds info (if not affilated) so they can fax their records/report over.

i selected my first Ped based on recommendation, proximity to my home and office hours. i never interviewed. i actually wound up switching Peds after about 2 years because their office took on too many patients and the wait times were ALWAYS an hour, and i never saw the same dr twice. i realized i wanted a small practice with short wait times. found a new Ped that fits the bill and i am very happy.

as for the people who used the on call ped when DC was born, did they take your insurance? that's what she was kind of saying - that the on call one might not take my insurance and she didn't want me to be stuck with a bill... which was a good point... I have Aetna and GHI(emblem health) so I am thinking most doctors accept those... i think. haha

We had GHI and they didn't take insurance but, we fought it and didn't have to pay it since we weren't given a choice (it was only like $100 though).
As for interviewing a pediatrician, I set up interviews since it was all the rage when I was pregnant 7 years ago for the first time on LIF  I asked for recommendations from friends in the area and was surprised that everyone I asked seemed to use someone different.
I narrowed it down to two - since I knew I wanted a larger practice and I did a phone interview and an in-person interview and they pretty much told me about the practice. I ended up selecting the one who gave me the phone interview since she was nicer.

I just called to make sure they took my insurance and we're accepting new patients. At the hospital they just want the name of who you plan to use and to make sure you will have the baby seen within a day or two of discharge.

i went based on recommendations. I also met with a few people to see who I clicked with. I originally thought that the meeting would be a waste of time since what do you really ask but I was shocked how great they were.
I met with one pediatrician and when I asked how the doctors work together especially on a case that the individual doctor had not seen before (this pediatrician was young) his response was "I am like Dr. House. I do not get stumped." Ok good bye!
Also, it is not true that you have to have the person to give to the hospital. I had my pediatrician picked out but she did not have rights in the hospital that I delivered in. Therefore I used one of the hospital's doctors and then just made an appointment for the day after I was released to see his actual pediatrician

I went on a recommendation of my neighbor. I needed them to be convenient to work/home and to also be supportive of EBFing. Other than that, I didn't have many requirements. You can always change if you don't like them.

I went off recommendations - but it did take me a while to click with a ped. The first one we used when DS was born was great but eventually really rubbed me the wrong way when I was discussing my PPD.
The second ped was also great and knowledgeable but the wait times were hideous - I'm talking an hour in the waiting room and an hour/hour and a half in the room before they would do the exam.
On my third practice and very happy - each doctor is different and some are a little pushy but overall the office is efficient, easy to schedule appts., friendly and very patient-oriented.

I did exactly the same thing. The only thing I did was make sure they took my insurance.
We used them for two years and then they became affiliated with northwell and they went downhill fast. After several issues we switched. But for 2 years they were fine.

Completely this. I just used someone my friend uses. We have similar parenting styles so I figured I'd be good. I'm happy with the choice.

Us too. But We met with 3 offices. I'm glad we went. One office was so tiny DH had to stand and the nurse gave me a script (she mixed me up with someone else which I didn't like) and I really preferred a sick/well area if possible. Another we went too (I'm sure it was a busy day), was so dirty I was skeeved. It was 6:30 at night, but there were dirty tissues all over the floor in the waiting area, crumpled up pieces of paper. It was gross. The dr also seemed annoyed and didn't know my OB (which shouldn't matter but he kept mentioning it which annoyed me).
I felt like goldilocks. Lol. The last one we met with was a good fit for both of us. So glad I didn't have to go through the process again for my 3rd.

My brother and SIL were happy with my nephew's ped, so we went with him. I did go for an "interview," but I knew I was going to go with him, so it was more of an opportunity for me to learn about the procedures of the practice, sick visits/well visits, etc. as well as for me to bring up concerns and questions.
Once at the hospital I just let them know this doctor was going to be DS's ped, and he had rights at the hospital so he was there both days. He also performed DS's circumcision, which some peds do.
