picking out clothes
DS is 4.5 and really wants to dress himself, which is great but the combos he has been coming with him just make me laugh. yesterday he wore a x-mas style sweater with no under shirt and a pair a track pants. today he wanted to wear another sweater, but he has school today. I was trying to explain to him that somethings are not meant to wear at school. he didn't like that answer and just wanted to wear the sweater

Re: picking out clothes
I let them wear what they want as long as it is weather appropriate. One of my son's wore a dress shirt backwards to my grandmother's 90th birthday party. My other son would wear costumes to preschool.

I always let Alex pick her clothes - I think it's important to give them a sense of independence over at least one aspect of their life that's harmless. As long as it's weather appropriate, she has free reign.
Her fashion "trademark" is mismatched shoes I made the mistake of buying two of the same pairs in different colors, gold and silver, so now she wears one silver and one gold, every day

I don't know what the answer is...I usually put their clothes out because well...I have a hard time with the outfits Maddie selects.
Remember this?

Re: picking out clothes
Sometimes she does, sometimes I do. My daughter has picked out some rediculous outfits but I let it go. Its hard for me because I waited my whole life to dress a little girl and I didn't realize I was only going t have until she was 3. Oh well. She would look cute wearing a potato sack.

Re: picking out clothes
Nope, don't let them do it and to tell you the truth they never really had very strong desires to pick on their own.
They do express preferences, like my daughter wants to wear dresses every single day but I can't let her do that because: a. she doesn't have that many dresses b. it's way too cold
Other than that I usually follow along with what they like.
My son mostly has preferences as to what he DOESN'T want to wear rather than what he does. Like he has a striped shirt that he hates so i never force him to wear it. All his other tops he likes he is happy with any of them.

Re: picking out clothes
This is the least of my worries and stresses, so yes I let them pick out their own clothes, and dress themselves. I prefer that THEY do it so they can be independent and I don't have to do it! As long as it's clean and weather appropriate, I don't care.

Re: picking out clothes
This is not a battle I choose to fight. As long as it's weather appropriate I let them wear it. My 5yr old and my 3 yr old are into picking out some real interesting combos.
