Pics inlcluded...Baby Charlie. Born April 9th 2012

My baby boy was born on Easter Monday, April 9th via vaginal delivery at Katz Women's Center at LIJ. I could not be more in love!

It all started on Easter Sunday at 11pm whenI had some bleeding, which I assumed was my bloody show. I called my doctor, and the doctor on call told me to head to the hospital to get checked out.

When I arrived at the hospital I was informed that despite my contractions which had started by this point, I was only 1 cm dilated. I was sent home.

By the time I got home my contractions had started to get pretty intense. Two hours later they were coming about 3 to 5 min apart, but never regulated. However, because I was literally screaming into my pillow, my husband called the doctor again. He said to go back to hospital.

When I returned, the same midwife I had seen earlier that night told me that unfortunately I was only 2 cm dilated. However, she "helped me out" and manually dilated me to three so I could be admitted.

That was fun.

I was admitted and given morphine because I was not dilated enough to receive an epi. Finally, when I was dilated enough to recieve an epi, I got it despite my thought that I was going to try to do it naturally. I was too tired to deal with the pain at that point, as it was a good 6 hours later and I had been awake at that point for almost 24 hours.

However, the epi may have prevented me from dilating. Because I could not seem to progress past 5 cm, they decided to give me pitocin. After what I believe was probably 13 hours of labor, I went from 5 cm to 9.5 cm. I believe that may have been after the doc broke my water. When it was finally time to push, I pushed for about an hour before it was determined that because the baby's heart rate dropped when I pushed that I may have to have a c section. However, in an effort to avoid one, the doc tipped my bed downward so it seemed as if I was literally hanging suspended as I waited for the baby to drop further. I stayed that way for about 2 hours, at which point we started pushing again. After what seemed like an eternity of pushing, and regulating my breathing in an effort to maintain a safe heart rate for both the baby and I, Charlie was born with an amazing 6 push contraction, numerous cut episiotomy and vaccum suctioning.

Despite what I felt was a traumatic experience, Charlie received an apgar score of 9 and was able to avoid the nicu. I was able to hold him after I was done being stitched up.

The care I received at Katz was great and facility was beautiful. I have had a pretty tough recovery, it has all been worth to have my little man.
