PINS and NEEDLES-Freddy update

Been a while...here goes

Jamaica thinks that he would be best served in a subacute facility for the rest of his rehab because they don't do functional rehab, just regular therapy. Great. The insurance company wants to keep him there because he's made such great progress. Ok..but they were missing the nursing component. the nurses there are not trained to help him functionally with his prosthesis. They are acute nurses that don't do rehab! Ok, that's effed up..they work in a rehab unit.

After lengthy conversation with his case manager at Empire (she's great), she is doing everything she can to get Fred to the right place. We think that place is North Shore extended care.

So we'll know soon whether he is accepted or not. I sure hope so. I can't take much more of this.

We expect that he will do better there because of the functional training.

But they have to accept him and have a bed for him.

Fingers crossed..sitting on pins and needles until I hear. The case worker is going on vacation next week and her boss will handle Fred's case. I'm told that she has been briefed.

On thing the case worker did say is that they want the best for him and will help him as much as possible. That is really unusual for an insurance company!! Fred is blessed and so are we. We also found out that Fred's policy will give him home care if he is homebound. That is usually not a covered benefit. Usually it's out of pocket. What a relief.

We got the apartment for them in Holtsville and mom and dad are planning their move for the end of Sept. It's possible that Fred could come home sometime in October depending on how he does.

Is it nuts that I just want my mommy and daddy here?

Being a grownup is overrated.

Re: PINS and NEEDLES-Freddy update

the way all these doctors and therapists talk you would think that the insurance company is the reason people don't get the help they really need.

I've seen it..my brother is very lucky. VERY LUCKY...he knows it too.

That is great about the insurance comp. My Dad had great coverage but I remember battling daily with the b!atch from the insurance company... she was a cold hearted wench. That's a huge relief!! I know what it feels likeChat Icon

I don't blame you one bit wanting your parents back here. You've carried a lot on your shoulders these past months... it's time to spread the responsibility.

I hate to admit it (being a history teacher) but France has done one thing right.

Re: PINS and NEEDLES-Freddy update

the case worker says that he's got at least 40 more years to live and we should give him the best chance at a recovery.

he may never be the same but we are ok with that.

Come on Northshore...please accept him.

thank you for the offer. Can you tell me which place?

The case manager at Jamaica sent his stuff to Northshore today. Of course I didn't expect to hear considering the holiday weekend. But I hope by Tuesday we have a plan to get him there.

Hey, if the insurance company says it's ok and they will pay I guess that's a big hurdle in getting him accepted.

He is dying to get out of there and I am too. He is really ready for the functional training.

Do your nurses do functional things with the patients? I know a person with a prosthesis is different than most, but he needs the functional training with it.

The head of PT at Jamaica says there are CNAs that are trained from the PTs to help with the prosthesis at subacutes. I certainly hope so.

I'm so glad you found an apartment for them, and it seems like things are looking up again. I will keep my fingers and anything crossed that Freddy is accepted at Northshore. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and Chat Icon because I'm sure you need one every so often.
